Hammers Give Bowen Seven-Year Extension; Europa League Winning Coach Mendilibar Sacked

Hammers Give Bowen Seven Year Extension: West Ham United have rewarded Jarrod Bowen’s performance over the past few years when the 26-year-old signed a new seven-year contract with the Hammers. The team made the announcement on Sunday a week after Bowen was recalled to the England squad. The signing meant that the right-winger will play for West Ham until 2030.

This was a great deal for Bowen who helped the Hammers win their first silverware since 1980 in the UEFA Europa Conference League. If the week is good for Bowen, it was not that great for UEFA Europa League-winning coach Jose Luis Mendilibar as Sevilla gave him his release papers due to the Andalusian club’s slow start to the 2023-24 Spanish La Liga season. The firing of Mendilibar should bring immediate changes to the club especially now that Sevilla are in 14th place and losing their luster in soccer betting sites around the world.

Hammers Give Bowen Seven Year Extension

England international Jarrod Bowen has signed a seven-year extension for West Ham United, keeping the 26-year-old right-winger/forward in the club until 2030. Bowen, who was recently recalled to play for England, said that he is happy to stay with the Hammers and build a winning team in the next seven years. The Leominster native has proven to be a star for the team, scoring 45 goals in 166 appearances. He is off to a good start in the 2023-24 Premier League season, as he has netted in five goals in his first eight games. Bowen was ecstatic with the latest development, saying that committing his future with the team would help his family become financially secured and his playing tenure with West Ham guaranteed. The young footballer also cherished the goal he scored for the Hammers in the UEFA European Conference League final.

West Ham boss David Moyes praised the deal, saying that it is “great news” for the club. Moyes added that the new deal gave Bowen a new lease of life and they are reaping the benefits. Bowen joined West Ham from Hull in 2020 for GBP18 million (USD22 million) and was previously linked with a move to Liverpool as a potential successor to Mohamed Salah. The Hammers currently occupy seventh place in the table with a 4-2-2 record (14 points). They won over Chelsea, Brighton, Luton and Sheffield. They drew with Bournemouth and Newcastle United and lost to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Sevilla Fire Mendilibar After Slow La Liga Start

UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla on Sunday announced the removal of coach Jose Luis Mendilibar due to the team’s poor start in the 2023-24 Spanish La Liga season. Sevilla handed the marching orders for Mendilibar after a 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. They are expected to be one of the upper-level teams in the La Liga but they now sit 14th in the current season with only two wins in their first eight games. Despite the firing, the team management thanked Mendilibar for his services.

Sevilla, in a team statement, said his role will be best remembered for helping the team win over Manchester United and Juventus on the road to the Europa League final. The Basque mentor led Sevilla to win over Jose Mourinho’s Roma on penalties. According to reports, former Athletic Bilbao and Valencia coach Marcelino Garcia Toral is linked with the new vacancy, after French side Marseille fired him recently. Mendilibar first served as coach in 1994 for Arratia. He also had stints with Basconia, Bilbao, Aurrera, Lanzarote, Eibar, Valladolid, Osasuna, Levante and Alaves before he was hired by Sevilla in March 2023. He managed a total of 977 games and recorded 369 wins, 271 draws and 337 losses.

Bukayo Saka Suffer Hamstring Injury, to Miss England Internationals

Arsenal right winger Bukayo Saka has sustained a hamstring injury that will force him two games for England in the coming international break. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the bad news on Sunday, saying that the 22-year-old will not play in England’s friendly with Australia on Friday and their European Championship qualifier against Italy on October 17. The 22-year-old has not trained a single session of soccer, said the Arsenal boss. Saka did not play for the Gunners against Manchester City in the Premier League after limping off during a Champions League loss to Lens in midweek. His absence ended broke his run of 87 consecutive Premier League appearances.

England manager Gareth Southgate had included Saka in his squad on Thursday but said he would take no risks with him. Saka’s absence will visibly affect England’s rotation in the friendlies, but Southgate is expected to have a ton of options to replace the right-winger. The squad will remain favorites in those matches and online sports picks will place their bets on the English side to win the two matches as they have a strong lineup on their current crop of call-ups.
