Posted by: Hilbert Mayer
Nineteen-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and 2019 French Open champion Ashleigh Barty will be the top seeds in Wimbledon’s main tournament. It will kick off on June 28. Here, legends Serena Williams and Roger Federer rank sixth and seven in their respective divisions.
Defending champion Djokovic will aim to gain his sixth Wimbledon title – and 20 overall. The Wimbledon victory will tie him with Federer and Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal for most Grand Slam titles. Nadal, however, will not be competing in the All England Club after withdrawing from the tournament. The Swiss tennis maestro will be competing in the event. He bids to gain his ninth Wimbledon crown and 21st Grand Slam overall. This will move him one ahead of Nadal in the all-time Grand Slam title wins list.
Russian Daniil Medvedev will be the second seed in the tournament, followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Andrey Rublev. Austrian Dominic Thiem pulled out of the tournament due to a wrist injury. Rounding off the Top 10 for the men’s side are Matteo Berrettini, Roberto Bautista Agut, Diego Schwartzmann, and Denis Shapovalov.
Wide-open Women’s Race
On the women’s side, Ashleigh Barty will seek to take home her second Grand Slam title. However, her hands will be full. The 2019 French Open winner last played in Roland Garros. She had to retire from her second-round match due to an upper-leg injury.
The women’s singles tournament will be deep with great players such as Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina contending for the crown. Sabalenka and Svitolina are second and third in Wimbledon. Sofia Kenin, Bianca Andreescu, Serena Williams, and Iga Swiatek, meanwhile, occupy the fourth to seventh seeds in the event. Rounding out the Top 10 are Karolina Pliskova, Belinda Bencic and Petra Kvitova.
Former Grand Slam winners Garbine Muguruza, Victoria Azarenka, and Angelique Kerber are also in the Top 32. Adding to the list, 2021 French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova seeks to continue her winning run. This is two weeks after her successful stint at Roland Garros. Other stars expected to shine in the tournament are hometown favorite Johanna Konta, Elise Mertens, Coco Gauff, and 2021 French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
