Taylor Fritz Beats Daniil Medvedev, Wins Diriyah Tennis Cup Crown

Taylor Fritz bared his intentions for the 2023 Australian Open by defeating defending champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets at the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Fritz outclassed Medvedev 7-6(7/5), 7-6(7/3) to win USD1 million and more importantly, the victory concluded the American season on a bright note as he got ready for the new season that will begin in just a few weeks. Tennis betting sites are counting on Fritz to break the European stranglehold in the world tennis scene as he hopes to become the first US bet to win the Grand Slam title since 2003 when Andre Agassi defeated Rainer Schuettler in straight sets in the final.

Taylor Fritz Beats Daniil Medvedev: Even Clash

The record crowd in Diriyah Arena witnessed a nip-and-tuck clash between the American and the Russian but the World No9 gained the upper hand in tiebreaks and secured the victory. Fritz showed class in key moments of the duel, exacting revenge over Medvedev, who won their initial match in the ATP Tour at Cincinnati. The one-hour-and-50-minute encounter had Fritz claiming nine breakpoints and delivering when it mattered the most as he won both tie-breakers against the 1.98-meter Russian.

Journey to the Finals

In his road to the finals, Fritz outplayed top-10 singles star Hubert Hurkacz and Cameron Norrie. Medvedev, on the other hand, defeated Alexander Zverev and Stan Wawrinka to reach the championship clash against the American. Fritz hopes to emulate the Russian’s success after claiming his first Grand Slam and world No1 ranking after his win in Saudi Arabia. It was the first setback of Medvedev in the kingdom after winning in 2019. Fritz is looking to use the title win in Saudi to pick up more ATP titles in the future and possibly crack at the Top 5. The American’s title-clinching triumph surprised ATP oddsmakers who were expecting Medvedev to outshine the American and take home the Diriyah Tennis Cup.

Side Event Featuring Saudi’s Top Four

The fans inside the Diriyah Arena were treated to an exhibition game between Saudi’s top four stars. The Alhogbani siblings – Ammar, Saud and Yara – played alongside Lara Bukharii as they were side-by-side with Saudi Arabia-born Michael Mmoh, World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas, World No. 28 Grigor Dmitrov and local personalities Spaaiki and Abdullah. The players entertained the crowd with their moves in an exciting exhibition.
