Carlos Alcaraz Stuns Djokovic to Win First Wimbledon Title; Vondrousova Completes Magical Run

Alcaraz stuns Djokovic to win first Wimbledon title; Vondrousova completes magical run

Carlos Alcaraz Stuns Djokovic: Carlos Alcaraz claimed his first Wimbledon title as he shocked seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in five sets on Sunday while Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded women’s player in the Open era to win the tournament as she outclassed Ons Jabeur. Alcaraz edged Djokovic, 1-6 7-6(8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4, in a four-hour-and-42-minute encounter to secure the second major title of his career. The 20-year-old, who won the United States Open crown in 2022, became the third youngest Wimbledon men’s singles champion and the third Spaniard to win the Grand Slam event.

In the women’s side, the 24-year-old Vondrousova claimed her first Grand Slam title at her second attempt, as she stunned sixth seeded Jabeur, 6-4 6-4. She became the third Czech woman to win the Wimbledon after Jana Novotna and Petra Kvitova. The results in the men’s and women’s singles finals surprised online tennis betting sites that sided on more experienced veterans Djokovic and Jabeur to prevail.

Carlos Alcaraz Stuns Djokovic: Alcaraz Edges Djokovic Despite Committing 45 Unforced Errors

Carlos Alcaraz Stuns Djokovic – World No1 Alcaraz fired 66 winners to outclass Djokovic despite committing 45 unforced errors. The Spaniard bucked a slow start in the first set by winning the second, third and fifth sets to lift his second Grand Slam trophy in an epic match that lasted four hours and 42 minutes. The 20-year-old let Novak Djokovic take a 5-0 lead in the opening set, but regained his bearings in the second set after claiming the 85-minute second set that ended in an 8-6 tiebreak score in favor of Alcaraz. It also ended the Serbian netter’s run of 15 tiebreaks won in a row at the majors.

The third set saw Carlos Alcaraz take a 2-1 lead thanks to three break points that he scored in the first, fifth and seven games. This is coupled by the Spaniard’s quick and efficient service game that just took more or less two minutes. Djokovic retaliated in the fourth set, breaking Alcaraz’s serve twice. The match ended when the Spanish netter committed his seventh double fault. In the decider, the Serbian wasted a precious opportunity to go 2-0 ahead when his smash went out. This allowed Alcaraz to turn the tide and surged to a 2-1 lead. The young netter made it 3-1 with the help of Djokovic’s code violation.

The Serbian committed the violation when he destroyed his racket against the net post. Alcaraz took home the victory when Djokovic placed his forehand in the net.  He was the third Spaniard to win Wimbledon after Manuel Santana in 1966 and Rafael Nadal in 2008. The loss foiled Djokovic’s attempt to tie Federer’s record of eight titles, match Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam wins and become the oldest Wimbledon men’s champion at 36 years old.

Vondrousova Tops Jabeur to Make History at Wimbledon

Vondrousova made history at the All-England tennis courts when she outclassed Jabeur in straight sets. The 24-year-old became the first unseeded woman to win the tournament in the Open era and the ninth unseeded champion at a Grand Slam tournament. The tattooed Czech netter claimed her first Grand Slam crown in her second attempt. She lost her first attempt in the 2019 French Open when she lost to Ash Barty in the final. Her victory also completed a remarkable comeback from various injuries that stopped her promising career. The World No42 became the second-lowest ranked player to reach the Wimbledon final since 2018 when Serena Williams won the title at No181.

For Jabeur, it was her second straight Wimbledon loss – and third loss in a Grand Slam final. She was trying to become the first Arab woman to win a Grand Slam event but it will have to wait for several weeks with the US Open on the horizon. She had no answer to Vondrousova’s power strokes as the Czech’s virtuoso performance silenced the mostly pro-Jabeur crowd at Center Court. The 24-year-old took the first set at 6-4 when she won four consecutive games to overcome a 2-4 deficit. Jabeur again stormed to a two-game lead in the second set but unforced errors halted her attempt to tie the match. Vondrousova regained her composure in the next six games, going 5-1 to win the championship.

The victories of Vondrousova and Alcaraz in Wimbledon capped a surprised-filled tournament where the highly-touted veterans fell by the wayside. This year’s event paved the way to the up-and-coming stars, who are expected to bring excitement moving forward. Alcaraz’s victory over Djokovic not just only stopped the Serbian’s bid to tie the records of Roger Federer and Margaret Court, but it also cemented his ascent to the men’s singles rankings. On the women’s side, Vondrousova’s win over Jabeur ended her quest for a maiden Grand Slam crown, four years after failing in her first attempt. The two tennis champions proved that they can be forces to reckon with in the future and dependable world beaters that sports oddsmakers can bet on in future events.
