Playing in his first-ever Grand Slam final, the German world number seven attempts to secure his maiden major tennis title. The 23-year-old, 198-centimeter Alexander Zverev began his US Open journey with a four-set victory over South African Kevin Anderson. He had two more four-set wins against Brandon Nakashima and Adrian Mannarino to reach the fourth round. He earned his first straight-set triumph against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina that moved him to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Zverev won his last eight showdowns against Borna Coric in four sets to earn a semifinal berth. In the final four, the German fought from two sets down to outclass Pablo Carreno Busta in five sets and secured the right to face Dominic Thiem in the final.
A three-time Grand Slam finalist, the Austrian world number three hopes to finally claim his first-ever major tennis title after two losses to Rafael Nadal in the 2018 and 2019 French Open final and a setback in the 2020 Australian Open title clash against Novak Djokovic. The 27-year-old, 185-centimeter Dominic Thiem opened his 2020 US Open campaign with a victory against Jaume Munar. He followed it up with a straight-set conquest of Sumit Nagal. The Lichtenworth native faced a challenge in the third round against former US Open champion Marin Cilic and emerged victorious in four sets. He blasted Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Round of 16, Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals, and Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals to seal a winner-take-all clash with Zverev.
