West Ham United vs Manchester City – Manchester City open their 2022-23 English Premier League season at London Stadium as they face West Ham United. Kickoff is on Sunday, August 7, 11:30 AM ET. BBC and Sky Sports covered the fixture live on television for audiences in the United Kingdom. Peacock will feature the match for US audiences. Sofascore will present the showdown via live stream. Manchester City won their fourth English Premier League title in five seasons after edging Liverpool by one point. Not satisfied with the latest title conquest, the Sky Blues made significant moves to bolster their lineup.

Their best move was the acquisition of 21-year-old forward Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Not to be outdone was West Ham as they gained the services of Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo and Nayef Aguerd from Rennes through transfers. The Hammers seek to improve their seventh-place finish last season, and to upset the Sky Blues in the first game of the season would be enormous. Soccer odds and parlays favor Manchester City to open their Premier League campaign with a bang despite competitive resistance from West Ham.

Under the tutelage of David Moyes, the Hammers finished the 2021-22 season seventh with a 16-8-14 record, or 56 points. They came two points close to a Europa League qualification, but the squad captured a slot for the Europa Conference League play-offs. West Ham opened the season with two victories and two draws. After losing in the fifth matchday, the Hammers catapulted to third after winning five of six matches. The team dropped three places to sixth in Week 18 after going 1-2-4. West Ham surged to fourth by Week 24 after going 4-0-2.

The Hammers fell three places by Week 30 after going 2-2-2 in their six-game stretch. In the last eight weeks of the season, West Ham went 2-2-4 to wound up seventh. Jarrod Bowen topped the team in scoring with 12 goals during the season. Michail Antonio was close behind with 10. The Hammers also acquired Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to serve as Lukasz Fabianski’s backup.

Manchester City

Manchester City defended their title in the 2021-22 season by the skin of their teeth, edging Liverpool by a point. The Sky Blues opened the season on a sad note with a loss. The defeat somehow woke the Sky Blues up, winning six of their next eight matches. A loss in Week 10 sparked Manchester City to win 12 straight from Week 11 to Week 22. The streak stopped  in Week 23 after the Pep Guardiola-managed team registered a draw. The Sky Blues won two more before losing their 26th game. Manchester City pulled off nine wins and three draws in the last 12 games to beat Liverpool, 93-92.

Three players scored at least 11 goals for Manchester City during the 2021-22 season. Kevin de Bruyne topped the trio with 15, while Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez added 13 and 11, respectively. However, Sterling won’t be around next season as he joined Chelsea. Center-Forward Gabriel Jesus and left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko also changed addresses to Arsenal. Top acquisition Erling Haaland is expected to fill up Sterling’s offensive game. Former Leeds defender Kalvin Phillips will boost City’s backline and make-up for Zinchenko’s loss.
