Sportsbooks Look Over 2017 US Open Cup
Posted by: Charlie Smith
The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup represents the oldest, ongoing national soccer competition in the US. On top of that, the US Open Cup is the world’s 3rd-longest running open soccer tournament. The event marks a perfect gambling opportunity for online MLS betting fans and sportsbook players alike, considering that the tournament pits teams from Major League Soccer, the North American Soccer League (NASL), and the United Soccer League (USL) against each other.
This Wednesday, the US Open Cup’s action continues as 26 teams will take the center stage to try and bring glory to their home city. With 13 contests to choose from, players who bet on soccer will have a full menu to select from this Wednesday. The action will begin at 7:00 pm with the FC Cincinnati and Columbus teeing off and will continue all the way up to 10:30 pm, when San Jose and the San Francisco Deltas face off.
One particular contest worth looking over is the matchup between the Charleston Battery and Atlanta United. Wednesday’s contest will be the 4th round of the Cup, and the eliminatory nature of the contest will raise the stakes for both sides. Let’s see what the sportsbook odds are predicting for this contest.
US Open Cup – 4th Round – Charleston Battery vs. Atlanta United
When: 7:30 pm ET
Where: KSU Soccer Stadium, Kennesaw, Georgia
TV: Local Broadcasts
Charleston Battery +1 (-108) 3 (-119) +505
Atlanta United -1 (-107) 3 (-101) -181
Charleston Battery/Atlanta United Draw +324
The Charleston Battery were able to make it to the Third Round in last year’s Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The club is happy to have made a little progress, but the Battery has their eye on that $250,000 1st place money.
So far in this year’s tournament, Charleston has faced the Atlanta Silverbacks and the Jacksonville Armada FC. Battery was able to overcome the Silverbacks 2-1 and beat the Armada FC 1-0.
The MLS usually ends up being well-represented in the US Open Cup. In fact, last year’s champions, FC Dallas, hail from the MLS. However, Charleston now has an opportunity to upend an MLS team and bring some glory to the United Soccer League.
Battery currently ranks 1st in USL standings, thanks to their 8-2-3 record which yields the franchise 27-points on the season. Charleston’s tally on the season gives them a 4-point lead over the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The United didn’t get a chance to compete at last year’s US Open Cup. However, that isn’t stopping the franchise from going all out this season. Being an MLS team, the United get a bye until the 4th round, meaning that the Battery will be the first test Atlanta has faced in this year’s tourney. The sportsbook odds are siding with Atlanta but we’ll have to see if Charleston can put up a fight.
In MLS Standings, the United rank near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, 8th to be exact. Atlanta has 18 points on the season, thanks to their 5-3-6 record. Their less than impressive ranking might lift Charleston’s spirits in that fight.
