South Korea
Judging by their recent outings, South Korea will need a miracle to keep up with Germany in this matchup. Not just because they’re outmatched and outgunned, but because they’re out-motivated. With a win, South Korea doesn’t gain much. Granted, everyone wants to come off a winning performance. But being sent home is the only thing that truly matters at the World Cup. And to get a victory in this matchup, South Korea will have to defeat a German side that is hell bent on coming out on top. However, there is an extremely unlikely scenario in which South Korea advances. They would need to beat Germany by two goals and have Sweden lose to Mexico decisively. Extremely unlikely, but the South Koreans will still try.
Players to Watch: Heung Min Son (Tottenham), Ki Sung Yeung (Swansea), and Lee Chung Yong (Crystal Palace).
Germany
Germany is pegged as a massive favorite in this matchup, the World Cup betting odds make that much clear. Notwithstanding those odds, Germany hasn’t exactly shone at this year’s World Cup. Or at least, they haven’t lived up to the expectations we placed on the reigning World Cup champions. They opened up their World Cup action by losing 0-1 to Mexico. And although they’re coming off a 2-1 win over Sweden, we haven’t seen the dominance on offense and defense that we’re accustomed to seeing. That doesn’t mean South Korea will be coming out on top however.
Players to Watch: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), and Timo Werner (RB Leipzig).
