How they got here

The US national team defeated Costa Rica 2-0 on Saturday to return to the Gold Cup final for the first time since 2013. Jozy Altidore opened the scoreboard in the 72nd minute and Clint Dempsey sealed the win with a direct free kick in the 82nd minute off the bench, thus tying the all-time USMNT scoring record – currently co-held by him and Landon Donovan Meanwhile, Tim Howard made a couple of key saves. As people who bet on soccer surely will remember. All Altidore, Dempsey, and Howard were all brought in as late reinforcement. Hey, don’t hate the players, hate the game. And speaking of game, the US elevated theirs compared to their previous match, with which the semifinal only shared the score. Then again, the Americans didn’t have much in the way of competition on Saturday. Hey, game recognize game.

The spirit of John Candy was with the Reggae Boyz on Sunday when they pulled the vaunted soccer betting upset against former favorites Mexico. New York Red Bulls left back Kemar Lawrence scored the last minute game-winning goal via free kick with 120 seconds to go in regulation. Meanwhile, Philadelphia Union goalie Andre Blake made five saves to preserve a clean sheet and make an even stronger case for tournament MVP. Blake has allowed only two goals in five games. In the end, the Jamaicans not only advanced to their second straight Gold Cup final but got back at the North Americans for their 1-3 loss in the 2015 championship game.

How they matchup

The USA has lost to Jamaica only on two occasions since they first met on July 24th, 1988 – though both losses have come as recently as 2012 and 2015. As a matter of fact, the Boyz knocked out the Americans 2-1 in the previous Gold Cup’s semifinals. The US clearly has much more firepower than the Jamaicans, so this will be a war of attrition. Case in point, Jamaica beat Mexico despite being out-possessed 69-31 – thanks to Blake’s miraculous saves and making the most of their openings (or opening) on attack. It ain’t pretty and it won’t win them style points, but that’s how Greece won a Eurocup and that’s how Jamaica could win their first Gold Cup. Of course, that’s what people who bet on soccer call flyin’ away on a wing and a prayer. The USMNT have everything going for them; the means, the talent, the soccer betting odds. Nothing short of a complete meltdown should stop them from lifting the trophy tonight.
