World Cup Odds:
Brazil is a perennially favored by the World Cup odds and 2018 was no different. However, Brazil didn’t exactly amaze us in their opening matchup versus Switzerland, which saw the match finish in a 1-1 draw. Nevertheless, Brazil then set themselves apart with a solid 2-0 win over Costa Rica. That victory helped the Brazilian side build some much needed momentum. In the following match, Brazil would use that momentum to deliver a 2-0 deficit over Serbia, securing their exit out of the group stage. In the Round of 16, Brazil was tasked with facing Mexico. Although they came out on top 2-0, they were heavily criticized, Neymar in particular, for lacking sportsmanship. The critiques are well-deserved since Neymar’s World Cup highlights are littered with the 26-year old rolling around and wailing as loudly as possible. Apparently he learned nothing from Messi in his time with Barcelona.
Players to Watch: Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain), Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona), Paulinho (Barcelona).
Belgium was one of this year’s World Cup favorites and they’re clearly living up to the hype. In their first World Cup matchup, Belgium took advantage of an inexperience Panama team and whooped them 3-0. After that, Belgium put on a clinic against Tunisia, triumphing 5-2. Their final group stage matchup resulted in a solid 1-0 defeat over England. This showed Belgium’s defensive prowess, since they were able to contain a dominant English offense. In the Round of 16, Belgium was paired with Japan. Although they were heavily favored, Japan put on quite a fight. But in the end, the samurais were eliminated 3-2.
Players to Watch: Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), and Dries Mertens (Napoli).
