Hockey Betting Sites Maul over Expansion Draft

We may be diving headfirst into the online NHL betting offseason, but now is no time to take any sports wagering breaks. This Wednesday, the NHL will hold an expansion draft to welcome the newest addition to the league. The Las Vegas Golden Knights are ready to join the National Hockey League and will compete as the 15th team in the Western Conference and 8th in the Pacific. But first, they’ll get to choose players from around the league.

2017 NHL Expansion Draft

The expansion draft will allow the Golden Knights to go around the league and select a single player from each team. Albeit, each club is afforded the ability to protect several of their players. The rules for the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft are as follows:

Teams can employ two different options in order to protect their players. They can choose to protect;

  1. Seven forwards, three defensemen, and one goalkeeper

Or

  1. Eight skaters (any combination of forwards and defensemen) and one goalkeeper

Additionally, any player who has a ‘No Movement’ clause that is active and binding at the time of the draft will be exempt from selection and will count towards that club’s applicable protection limit. However, players can waive that clause and open themselves up for electability.

All 1st and 2nd year players will be excused from the draft and will not count towards each teams applicable protection limit.

However, in addition to rules for protection there are also rules to ensure that teams leave a good share of their talent available for picking. Essentially, each team must have;

  1. One defenseman who meets the following requirements;
    1. Under contract for the 2017-18 season
    2. Played in 40 or more NHL games the previous season OR has played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two seasons
  2. Two forwards who meet the following requirements;
    1. Under contract for the 2017-18 season
    2. Played in 40 or more NHL games the previous season OR has played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two seasons
  • One goaltender who will be under contract for 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent ahead of the 2017-18 season.

In addition to restrictions and rules for the teams who are offering up players, Las Vegas will also have to comply with some online NHL betting guidelines. These include:

  1. Las Vegas must select one player from each team for a total of 30 players.
  2. The Knights must choose 14 forwards, 9 defensemen, and 3 keepers.
  3. 20 of the selected players must be under contract for the 2017-18 season.
  4. The players chosen must have an aggregate Expansion Draft value of 60-100% of the prior season’s upper limit for the salary cap.
  5. The Knights cannot ‘buy out’ any of the players selected in the Expansion Draft earlier than the summer following its 1st season

Hockey betting sites will continue to cover the Expansion Draft leading up to the event this Wednesday.
