What Super Bowls did the Chiefs win? The winner of the Super Bowl always makes history. However, if the Kansas City Chiefs win again, they will make unprecedented history. However, the Chiefs would do what no team has done before – win three Super Bowls in a row.
The Chiefs have won a Super Bowl before Patrick Mahomes came along. Indeed, the Chiefs have a rich history of winning games. However, other than early success in the Super Bowl era, they were often thought of as a “hard luck” franchise. They could win plenty of games in the regular season, but they struggled in the playoffs.
Even bringing in highly successful coaches and players from outside the organization (Marty Schottenheimer, Joe Montana, Priest Holmes, etc.) the modern Chiefs couldn’t quite get over the hump. As you may know, the Chiefs actually lost the very first Super Bowl. They lost it to the Packers dynasty in a game that observers report wasn’t as close as it seems. Speaking of “hard luck” franchises, the Chiefs won Super Bowl 4 over the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have been to multiple Super Bowls but have never won one. In January of 1970, the Chiefs controlled the game against the Vikes in Tulane Stadium, winning by a score of 23-7. If you’ve ever seen the famous picture of quarterback Len Dawson smoking a cigar, it comes from this game.
Super Bowl LIV
Fifty years. That’s how long the Chiefs went between Super Bowl appearances. Think about how long that is. The Chiefs had good teams during those times, yes. A few times, they had the best record in the AFC and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. But, it just wasn’t enough to get them over the hump, so to speak… at least, not until February of 2020.
Yes, less than a month before the pandemic, the Chiefs played the San Francisco 49ers at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. They beat the 49ers in this game in a game they were absolutely trailing. This 49ers team was different than the one they would see just a few years later – this team was even more reliant upon its running game. The idea was that they’d run the ball and then have Jimmy G do just enough to win.
But, Mahomes’ flair for coming back was really on display here, and the Chiefs came back to win it.
Super Bowl LVII
A few years later, (and after losing a Super Bowl to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers), the Chiefs were back in the Super Bowl. This time, they were playing the Philadelphia Eagles. This Eagles team is, in many ways, similar to the one that the Chiefs will see on Sunday. It has Jalen Hurts at quarterback, the same coach, etc. (What it won’t have, of course, is Saquon Barkley, but we’ll get to that).
This was a tight game. It was a real back-and-forth affair. Many players and coaches will tell you that Jalen Hurts played the game of his life in this one. However, it wasn’t enough. Indeed, the one turnover was what really turned the tide of this game or the Eagles very well may have won it. But a late touchdown put it away, and the Chiefs won, 38-35.
Super Bowl LVIII
This one you probably remember clearly. The 49ers were doing very well in this game at multiple parts of it. Indeed, a few times it seemed like they might be able to pull away. But, they were never able to get up by enough points that the Chiefs couldn’t come back. And, of course, the Chiefs did. They tied it in regulation and then eventually won it in just the second Super Bowl to go to overtime.
Super Bowl 59 Beckons
What can we learn from this? Well, Super Bowl IV doesn’t seem to offer much in the way of help, but looking back at these games, the Chiefs trailed them more than you might initially think. Indeed, the Chiefs are so good at coming back that it almost feels like they’re going to win any game where they get the last possession.
