Seahawks Flying into Playoffs as NFL Betting Favorites

Halfway through the 2016 NFL betting season, it seemed pretty clear that the Detroit Lions would be the team laying claim to the NFC North. The Lions found themselves at 9-4 after delivering an impressive 5-game win streak that included two wins over the Minnesota Vikings. With only three games left in the season, Detroit winning the North was all but guaranteed. However, three straight games against playoff teams proved to be too much for the Lions and Detroit would go on to finish the season with a 3-game losing streak. In Week 17 the Lions faced the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North title game and ended up losing a tough contest 31-24. Luckily enough for Detroit, their midseason success was enough to guarantee them a spot in the playoffs. But since they’re entering the season on a 3-game losing streak, there aren’t too many sportsbooks who will be siding with Detroit in the postseason.
In the first round of the playoffs the Lions will have to face off against the NFC’s 3rd seed, the Seattle Seahawks. This will be the NFC’s first round of the Wild Card; ergo the contest will be played this upcoming Saturday. Since Seattle is the higher seed they will be enjoying the home field advantage. The Seahawks and their infamous 12th man were 7-1 at home this season so the online football betting odds are likely to favor them this weekend.
NFL Odds – NFC Wild Card Round – Saturday, January 7th (Full Limits Available on Game Day)
Detroit Lions +8 (-115) 42½ (-110) +295
Seattle Seahawks -8 (-105) 42½ (-110) -360
It seems that sportsbooks have unanimously made up their mind about this weekend’s NFC Wild Card contest and are predicting that Detroit will fail to snap their current losing streak. It’s hard to imagine that the Lions will be able to come into this game with any semblance of confidence after losing three straight and with Matt Stafford still nursing a finger injury. However, the Seahawks aren’t coming in with a win streak of their own and if they don’t show up to play the Lions could very well deliver an NFL betting playoff upset.
The Seahawks punched their ticket to their 5th straight playoff appearance by winning the NFC West, arguably one of the least demanding divisions in the league. Even though the Seahawks were able to win their relatively unchallenging division, 2016 was anything but easy. Throughout the season the Seahawks struggled to beat some of the weakest opposition on their schedule; the Rams, the Bucs, and the Cardinals. To put a nail on the 2016 season, the Seahawks were able to scrape by against the 49ers 25-23. However, that type of performance against a team with only two wins doesn’t instill confidence in NFL betting fans that were looking to back the Seahawks in the postseason. The Lions may not pose much of a threat, like the sportsbook odds indicate, but looking around at how much talent the NFC has in the playoffs, it’s hard to imagine the Seahawks getting much further than the Wild Card round.
