New England Patriots NFL Division Odds Spike With Cam Newton

The New England Patriots were able to fill a huge void at quarterback with the signing of Cam Newton. Following the departure of Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 2015 NFL MVP was deemed fit for the Pats. However, New England can only raise their NFL division odds if the 31-year-old is healthy. Most know how Newton played only two games, struggling with a Lisfranc fracture. The Carolina Panthers gave up on him and eventually released him on March 24, 2020. His inability to stay healthy became a concern with teams seemingly passing upon him. That would all change in July when the Patriots signed him to a one-year deal.

Newton’s deal includes a base salary of $1.05 million. Though it was not much for someone of his caliber, the 31-year-old can work his way towards adding some numbers across that. All he has to do is prove he can stay healthy and earn up to $7.5 million in incentives and playing time bonuses. Hence, the best thing that Newton can do right now is nurse himself back to health and maintain it. The deal makes sense since New England would have no use for someone who would remain in the sidelines. Once Cam Newton figures that out, critics feel that the Patriots will be a team to watch.

NFL Division Odds Will Change Depending On Newton’s Health

The past years saw the Pats’ success hinge on the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady partnership. That has ended with the veteran quarterback opting to play for Tampa Bay. It was a tough spot for Brady who knows that his playing years are numbered. Now 42, Brady showed signs of slowing down the last NFL season. Understandably, New England wanted to take the safe route and offer him a short-term deal. Unfortunately, Brady wanted more. They now take a chance on a much younger quarterback, someone who has proven he can carry a team on his shoulders. That was in full display back in 2015, leading the Panthers against the Denver Broncos at Super Bowl 50. It has been downhill from there for Newton, mostly due to injury.

Newton can easily prove that with the Patriots. But the only problem is that he only has a year to prove it. If he fails, the repercussions could be dire. He could end up being a free agent next offseason and NFL teams may not be willing to sign him. Hence, this coming NFL season will be pivotal for Newton. The more games he plays, the better his chances of reviving his seemingly dipping career.

For Newton, he has a lot to prove to the Panthers and his detractors. He is in good hands with Belichick. All he has to do right now is to work his way back to health and make sure he can last the whole season. Most are already dreading the idea of a healthy Newton playing for the Pats. There is a great chance that New England may just be the surprise package as it moves past the Tom Brady era.
