Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers are coming off a major upset. They were unable to stave off the Denver Broncos in their recently-concluded matchup. They had to settle for a 23-20 scoreboard. QB Philip Rivers was at maximum power, going for 20/29 with 265 passing yards. He chucked in 2 thrown TDs and an interception. Melvin Gordon supported the ground crew, carrying the ball for an impressive 20 times. He extended the team’s yards by 99. Mike Williams was pegged as the top catcher, receiving the ball 5 times for 117 yards.
The Los Angeles Chargers could have secured a win if their defense had been tighter. They only offered a token defense against both throws and rushes. The Chargers allowed a 64% throw completion rate and were listless against 25 rush attempts. This afforded their opponent more chances of getting the ball across the end zone.
The Chargers trusted in the rush tactic to deliver. They did it for 29 out of 61 plays. They covered 359 yards as compared to their enemy’s 218. This match is a good example of how yardage gained doesn’t assure victory. The Chargers should have won- if they were more accurate with their endzone rushing.
Players to watch:
P. Rivers QB (11 GP 268 CMP 416 ATT 64.4 CMP% 3169 YDS 7.6 AVG 290.3 YDS/G 56 LNG 15 TD 14 INT 23 SACK 130 SYL 47.1 QBR 85.5 RTG), M. The Jaguars were outclassed by their previous opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They suffered a 28-11 disappointment. QB Gardner Minshew II attempted to salvage things with a 16/27 and 147 air yards record. He completed 1 thrown TD and 1 interception. Leonard Fournette was less fortunate, carrying the ball 14 times for a measly 38 yards. The top receiver was Dede Westbrook, clocking in 60 yards via 5 receptions.
The Jaguars obviously had problems on the ground. The RB barely covered territory despite his several ball possessions. They also chose to rush only 17 out of 63 plays. Their mixed offense didn’t work as well as they hoped, as their opponent racked up points due to their lackluster defense. The Jaguars allowed a 64% throw completion rate. They also let slip a worrisome 31 rush attempts.
The Jaguars fell because of bad tactics and insufficient defense. They better be on guard not to repeat the same mistakes as they face an equally challenging opponent this time around.
