Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs finished last year’s sportsbook action with a 10-6 record that saw them win the division. All in all Kansas City had a great start to the season. Early on they were pegged as one of the absolute favorites to win the AFC and even perhaps the Super Bowl. However, the Chiefs struggled on the road all season long. Moreover, those troubles began to manifest themselves in the rest of the team. Alex Smith began to look less crisp and a stellar running game soon began to crumble. What made things worse is that these troubles arose near the end of the season, right when the team was poised to make a playoff run. Instead, we saw them get eliminated in the Wild Card round by the Tennessee Titans 21-22. Now, having said farewell to Smith, the Chiefs are hoping to build on last year’s success, turning the franchise over to their young QB.

Players to Watch: Patrick Mahomes (284 passing yards, 0 TD, 1 INT), Kareem Hunt (1327 rushing yards, 8 TD, 1 F), and Tyreek Hill (1,183 receiving yards, 7 TD, 75 REC).

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers delivered a 9-7 season last year that saw them finish 2nd in the AFC West. Despite having a winning record, Los Angeles was unable to lock up a Wild Card seed. Most of Los Angeles’ problems stemmed from an inability to stop the run. Ultimately they ended up ranking penultimate against the run in the league. Despite giving up huge chunks of yardage on the ground, Los Angeles was pretty good in the red zone as they ranked 3rd in points allowed. Offensively their run game wasn’t too good either as they finished 24th in the league. However, they did manage to turn in the best passing offense of the NFL. With Rivers now another year older, Los Angeles knows they need to push for the Super Bowl next season.

Players to Watch: Philip Rivers (4,515 passing yards, 28 TD, 10 INT), Melvin Gordon (1,105 rushing yards, 8 TD, 1 F), and Keenan Allen (1,393 receiving yards, 6 TD, 102 REC).
