Fly Nick Fly: Foles Officially Headed Towards Free Agency
Posted by: Mike Davis
While it may not come as a shock to the online NFL betting community, the Eagles have announced that they will not pursue a franchise tag for Nick Foles. Subsequently, the Super Bowl winning quarterback is now a free agent. The news was announced by Howie Roseman, the Eagles’ executive vice president of football operations, earlier today. So what sort of NFL sports betting implications come from this Super Bowl LII MVP hitting the market? Let’s mulch over the possibilities down below.
Nick Foles & the Eagles Split
“We’ve spent a lot of time discussing this internally and with him,” Roseman told the media Wednesday. “And we’ve decided to let Nick become a free agent.”
All things considered, this decision isn’t all that shocking. Although Foles won the Super Bowl for the Eagles, which included a hefty run through the postseason, there’s no question that he’s not their future. Moreover, he also does not give them the best chance to succeed. In the modern day of the NFL, teams with young, talented quarterbacks are the most successful. Heck the two most prolific teams from last year’s season, the Rams and the Chiefs, had this very formula. This is because teams are able to get a talented quarterback at an extremely low value. Afterwards they have much more cap space to pursue talent in other parts of the field.
“It’s hard when you have someone who’s incredibly available to your organization at the most important position in sports. And at the same time we’ve had incredible success with him when he’s had to play. Four playoff wins over the last two years. Great teammate, huge resource for Carson [Wentz] and Nate Sudfeld, as well,” Roseman continued.
“But at the same time, he deserves an opportunity to lead another team and another locker room.”
It’ll be interesting to see where Foles lands eventually. However, the team that does get him shouldn’t get their hopes too high. This is because, as aforementioned, the key to success in the modern day NFL is having a young quarterback. Foles on the other hand, is a veteran with a Super Bowl ring. At the end of the day, he’s looking to get paid (and rightfully so).
Nick Foles Free Agency Implications
Ultimately Nick Foles’ free agency comes on the heels of some interesting chain of events. First we saw the Eagles’ pick up Foles’ $20 million option this month, which Foles quickly countered by voiding in order to become a free agent. Afterwards Philly could have elected to place a franchise tag on him. However, given the relationship they have with the veteran, they chose to let him pave his own path in the end.
So where will Foles’ end up? There are plenty of teams looking for a veteran quarterback to bolster their roster. This includes the New York Giants, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Denver Broncos, the Buffalo Bills and the Arizona Cardinals. Heck even the New England Patriots could be on the lookout for a quarterback, although they’re much more likely to stick to the draft. All in all the best place for Foles to end up would probably be Jacksonville.
The reason being that much of Foles’ success with the Eagles relied on their stout defense. In Jacksonville he will find a more than capable defense. Albeit they did look a bit weak at times last season, but that could all change with a dominant quarterback joining the lineup. Not necessarily saying that Foles is that guy, but with a healthy Leonard Fournette behind him he very well could be.
But at the end of the day there’s no guarantee Foles will go on to find success. After all, mobile betting players saw the Viking throw a heap of money at Kirk Cousins only to miss out on the playoffs. And there are plenty of NFL betting fans who would place Cousins ahead of Foles.
