Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are rising from the ashes of defeat. They were within the clinching range of the Oakland Raiders but failed to dish out one last touchdown. The Lions ended with a 31-24 score. The players really put in the effort, and it’s apparent in their stats. QB Matthew Stafford was valiant with his 26/41 and 406 air yards. But his crowning glory came from three thrown TDs and 1 interception. JD McKissic led the rush department with 4 ball possessions. He was able to gain 32 yards. Meanwhile, Kenny Golladay caught the ball 4 times for an additional 132 yards.

The Lions gained a total of 473 yards from 63 varied plays. Their opponent gained only 450 yards but did not seem to be bothered by the yardage disadvantage. The defense of the Lions was average. 36 opponent carries and a 65% thrown completion rate meant that the other team had plenty of chances at goals and touchdowns.

The Lions have a decent set of stats. However, as evidenced by the current leaders in the NFL, decent is just the baseline. Each team needs to rise above that in order to claim a higher ranking.

Chicago Bears

The Bears had just absorbed a disappointing defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles with a 22-14 score. The players weren’t exactly at their best, as indicated by the stats. QB Mitchell Trubisky had low stats at 10/21 and 125 air yards, and no thrown touchdowns. Taylor Gabriel was the top receiver, with 3 catches that converted into 69 additional yards. The only shining light in the previous matchup was David Montgomery. He carried the ball 14 times. Due to the tenacity of his rushing game, he was able to push in 2 running TDs.

The Bears gained an alarmingly small area of the field. Out of 42 plays, they only gained 164 yards. This is in stark contrast to the opponent’s 373 yards. The Bears also did not clamp down on rush or throwing defense, leading to an average performance all around. If only the Bears tightened up their defense, they may not have to lag behind the opponent’s superior playmakers.

The Bears need to change game tactics or branding. They need something that will rejuvenate the team’s spirit and inspire them to attain greater heights next season.
