With each online betting football passing week, the Kansas City Chiefs’ tumble from the top of the AFC continues to worsen. This past weekend the Chiefs had a good opportunity to mount a rebound by defeating the Buffalo Bills. But instead of picking up an easy home win, the Chiefs fell 16-10 to the Bills and continue to open the door on the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders to come in and take this division out from under them. This Sunday, the Chiefs will face the New York Jets on the road and sports betting sites are pegging Kansas City as the favorites once again. But considering how deep of a grave the Chiefs are digging for themselves, should NFL bettors feel confident in backing the current leaders of the AFC West?

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs ride into this Week 13 matchup sporting a 6-5 record that ranks them 1st in the division ahead of the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders – both of whom are sitting on a 6-5 record. It’s not surprising to see Kansas City pegged as the betting favorite this weekend. In reality, NFL bookmakers don’t have much of a choice considering that they’ll be facing the Jets and that the Chiefs were borderline unstoppable through the first couple of weeks of 2017. So what exactly happened to Kansas City? Well, at first online betting football players will be tempted to say that the Chiefs must have forgotten how to play. However, the real answer is that the level of competition in the NFL rises as the year goes on. Alex Smith had no problem picking apart defenses that we’re still learning how to play with each other. Now, against a coordinated and confident defensive unit, we’re seeing massive cracks in the Chiefs week in and week out.
New York Jets
The New York Jets ride into this Sunday’s pairing flashing a 4-7 record that ranks them 3rd in the AFC East. Mathematically speaking, there is still a possibility for the Jets to make the playoffs. But there’s no way on God’s green Earth that the Jets could possibly beat out the 9-2 New England Patriots for an AFC East title. Instead, the Jets can try and snatch up a Wild Card berth. But since the Jets are 3-games under .500, and have lost 5 out of their last 6: it doesn’t seem like New York will be making the playoffs in 2017.
A fast glance at both of these teams’ numbers will reveal that the Chiefs have the clear advantage on offense. The Chiefs’ O is currently putting up 24.7 points per game which ranks 7th in the NFL. Kansas City also ranks 9th in total offense, 13th in passing and 15th on the ground. For comparison, the Jets rank 16th in the NFL in scoring with an average of 23.4 points scored per game; New York’s offense ranks 19th overall, 15th in passing, and 26th on the ground. Football betting books are predicting a 3-point spread which seems reasonable.
