Chiefs Leading the West Despite Shaky Statistics
Posted by: Charlie Smith
At the start of the season, the best NFL sportsbooks weren’t picking the Kansas City Chiefs to win the AFC West, but they weren’t ruling them out either. In fact, the Chiefs, along with the Oakland Raiders, had the second best odds of taking the division away from the reigning Super Bowl Champions in 2016. But in the end it would be the Raiders and the Chiefs who would have to duke it out to lay claim to the division. That titanic battle was settled this past online NFL gambling weekend when Kansas City emerged triumphant over the Raiders 21-13. That defiant victory marked the second time the Chiefs had beaten Oakland this season. With last weekend’s win, the Chiefs are the official leaders in the West. However, since the Raiders share Kansas City’s record of 10-3, the Chiefs need to make sure they finish out the season on a solid note.
In Week 15, Kansas City will be catching a break by squaring off against a low caliper team, the Tennessee Titans. The Titans will be coming into this matchup with a 7-6 record as well as a 2-game winning streak. On the other hand, the Chiefs will be coming into this matchup with a 3-game winning streak. For this contest the Titans will be traveling to Missouri to face off with the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Tennessee is 3-3 on the road while the Chiefs are 5-1 at home. Considering that difference, most football betting sites will be siding with Kansas City.
NFL Odds – Week 15 – Sunday, December 18th
Kansas City Chiefs -5½ (-110) 41 (-105) -230
As is to be expected, the online NFL gambling lines are siding with the Chiefs this Sunday. The Chiefs are one of those teams that don’t look amazing on paper but are extremely tough to beat on the gridiron. For example, the Chiefs currently have the 27th worst rushing defense in the NFL, the 18th worst pass defense, and the 27th worst total defense in the league. Normally one would associate those numbers with a 6-10 team but somehow Kansas City has found a way to win 10 games this season, despite a statistical poor showing on defense. However, those numbers only apply to the amount of yards the Chiefs give up and it should be noted that Kansas City is giving up the 8th least amount of points.
What’s interesting is that the Chiefs aren’t impressive on offense either. It’s not unheard of for a lackluster defense to be carried by a high-powered offense or vice-versa. But what is shocking is that the Chiefs have the 26th worst rushing offense, 18th worst passing game, and 24th worst total offense. And yet, despite of all this, the Chiefs are still the leaders of the toughest division in the NFL. While that might be mind boggling for online NFL gambling fans, one thing that should help shed some light on the Chiefs success is their pristine turnover ratio of +11. At the end of the day, if you can hold onto the ball and your defense keeps robbing the other team, you’re bound to win a few football games.
