Battle in the East: Pats and ‘Fins Face Off in Week 2
Football season is already here and with the first week of action we’ve already seen some changes amongst the online NFL betting favorites. The Panthers have lost some love after their poor debut and the bandwagon for the Green Bay Packers just keeps getting larger. The Patriots – the AFC favorites to win the Super Bowl – are currently in a limbo due to the fact that they are still serving Brady’s suspension. Jimmy Garoppolo proved more than capable of leading this team to a victory, but without #12 fans haven’t truly gotten to see what the Pats are capable of. In their 2016 debut the Patriots were able to overcome one of last year’s playoff contenders, the Arizona Cardinals. The game against the Cardinals was certainly hard fought, but their upcoming match against their division rival Dolphins could prove to be even more difficult.
Not too many critics are expecting the Dolphins to have a breakout season after going 6-10 in 2015. However, the Dolphins are coming in with an entirely new coaching staff led by first time head coach Adam Gase. Gase had been known around the league for holding different positions such as quarterback coach or offensive coordinator. Now this year he’s getting his first chance to call the shots and his first test came against one of the NFC’s best, the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks were picked as the favorites by the online NFL betting odds, but the final score was much closer than anticipated.
The Seahawks came out on top 12-10, but it was with the slimmest of margins; the Dolphins were able to gain 214 yards of total offense while holding the Hawks to 352. Miami’s performance can be highlighted by the two turnovers they forced Seattle to commit. Although they were able to hang in there, a late Seattle touchdown sealed the Dolphins hopes. Ryan Tannehill had one last chance for a Hail Mary at the end of the game but was unable to connect. The reception of this game came in two forms; some critics praised the Dolphins for their impressive showing against Seattle, while others criticized the Seahawks for not putting up a more impressive performance against what is considered one of the weaker teams in the AFC East. While it may be too early to favor one theory over another, there will be enough evidence to rule one theory out at the end of Week 2. Miami can now focus on trying to overcome the Brady-less Pats and prove themselves as legitimate contenders in the East. Let’s check the odds across the best football betting sites to see what they have to say about this matchup.
Week 2 Sunday, September 18th
Dolphins +6 ½ (-110) 41 ½ (-110)
Patriots -6 ½ (-110) 41 ½ (-110)
This game provides both teams an early opportunity to get a head start in winning the division. Both the Jets and the Bills lost in Week 1 and if the Dolphins upset the Pats then they will earn themselves the #1 spot in the East. There’s still a lot of football to be played but getting a head start is never a bad thing. The online NFL betting spread favors the Pats in this matchup, but a Miami upset isn’t unfathomable. The Pats will get another chance to prove they don’t need Brady to win games, while the Dolphins will be looking to assert their dominance and prove they are for real.
