Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons suffered a defeat from their previous matchup versus the Seattle Seahawks. The 27-20 scoreboard was indicative of a well-fought battle, with the Falcons just coming up short in terms of scoring capability. QB Matt Schaub contributed 39/52 with an impressive 460 air yards. He sealed the deal with a TD and an interception. Devonta Freeman also attempted a TD, but he didn’t get it via the rush. He held on to the ball 13 times, running for 39 yards. Julio Jones received the ball 10 times, bringing in a big 152 yards for the team.

The Falcons had above average stats if based on the leading stat makers. What’s curious, however, is that they only ran for 17 out of 71 plays. It seems the backbone of their yardage-gaining machine was on throws rather than rushes. The team gained a total of 510 yards versus the opponent’s 322 yards. Despite this surprisingly wide gap, the Falcons still lost when it came to scoring attempts.

For one thing, their opponent actually made 33 rush attempts. The weakness of the Falcons is thus exposed: they’re good on covering yards and throw tactics, but they’re weak on rushing and defending against rushing as well. They need to mitigate this weakness to get a better win-loss record.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints are heavily favored to win this matchup, and it’s no surprise as to why. With their 7-1 win-loss record, the Saints are on target for the finals as one of NFL’s top-tier teams. For another, they’ve just completed an ownage of a matchup versus the Arizona Cardinals with a 31-9 scoreboard.

Stats-wise, the players are obviously top-tier performance. QB Drew Brees pumped in 34/43 with 373 air yards. He chucked in 3 TDs and an interception. Latavius Murray scored a rushing touchdown in addition to his 102-yardage gain. He carried the ball 21 times. Michael Thomas was all over the place, catching the ball 11 times and adding 112 yards.

The Saints didn’t just outscore their previous opponent- they also shut down their offense completely. The Saints played a very tight defense, allowing the opponent only 56% throw completion rate and 11 rush attempts.

With this kind of performance, it won’t be surprising if the Saints emerge as this season’s champion.
