Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals just concluded a win against the New York Giants with a 27-21 record. Everything was going well for the team- the quarterback, rush master, and lead receiver all had impressive stats to contribute. QB Kyler Murray went 14/21 and 104 air yards. While he wasn’t able to chuck in any thrown touchdowns, his presence in the field counted for a lot. Chase Edmonds carried the ball 27 times for a total of 126 yards. His longest run of 22 yards bore fruit. With a 4.7-yard average per carry, he solidly rushed 3 touchdowns. Pharoh Cooper only caught 4 balls, but he averaged 7.4 yards on each catch.

The Cardinals were on a rush mission, choose to run with the ball 38 out of 61 plays. They managed to cover 245 yards. This small yardage gain despite a lot of plays proves that they actually had difficulty getting past the opposing team’s defenses. They tried to put up a token defense, but the opposing team still delivered with a 63% completion rate. Overall, the Cardinals conceded 263 yards, which was actually more than their yardage gain. It seemed they won that match due to their superior scoring ability.

The Cardinals have good scoring output, there’s no doubt about that. However, they need to improve their yardage gain. While yards aren’t everything, they’re the key to dominating an opposing team. The Cardinals can’t play shoot-em-up all the time, especially against top-tier teams who are really good at rushing and eating up field space.

Players to watch: Kyler Murray (259 ATT 167 CMP 1768 YDS 7 TD), David Johnson (77 CAR 300 YDS 3.9 AVG 2 TD 30 REC 315 YDS 10.5 AVG), Chase Edmonds (51 CAR 287 YDS 5.6 AVG 4 TD), Larry Fitzgerald (36 REC 439 YDS 12.2 AVG 2 TDS), Christian Kirk (24 REC 242 YDS 10.1 AVG 0 TDS), Damiere Byrd (15 REC 160 YDS 10.7 AVG 0 TDS).

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints were surprisingly challenged by lower-ranked Chicago Bears during their last matchup. While the Saints still reigned supreme with a 36-25 scoreboard, they had to look to their trustworthy playmakers to secure the win. QB Teddy Bridgewater, one of the more known personalities in NFL nowadays, threw in 2 touchdowns. He also threw at 23/38 with 281 passing yards. Latavius Murray won’t let him have all the glory, however. Murray carried the ball 27 times. He averaged 4.4 yards for a run total of 119 yards. As if his efforts weren’t enough, he capped off the game with 2 touchdowns.

Michael Thomas was also a standout with his 9 catches. This enabled the Saints to pull away with 131 yards. The 24 first-downs came at the minimum price of 4 penalties. 35 out of 74 plays were all rush-oriented. The Saints dominated the field with 424 yardages gained as compared to their opponents’ 252 yards. The defense was average, allowing the opponent a significant 63% completion rate.

While the rush served as the Saints’ crowning glory in their previous matchup, it’s actually not their go-to strategy. Hopefully, after the success of this game, the Saints consider putting more fire into their rush tactics to further improve their already-formidable team.

Players to watch: Teddy Bridgewater (195 ATT 132 CMP 1370 YDS 9 TD), Alvin Kamara (86 CAR 373 YDS 4.3 AVG 1 TD 33 REC 276 YDS 8.4 AVG), Latavius Murray (59 CAR 257 YDS 4.4 AVG 3 TD), Michael Thomas (62 REC 763 YDS 12.3 AVG 3 TDS), Ted Ginn (18 REC 254 YDS 14.1 AVG 1 TDS), Jared Cook (15 REC 168 YDS 11.2 AVG 2 TDS).
