Bowl Game Betting Lines:
Marshall Thundering Herd +5 ½ (-110) 58 (-110) +190
Colorado State Rams -5 ½ (-110) 58 (-110) -230
Marshall Thundering Herd
The Marshall Thundering Herd finished the regular season with a 7-5 record. That lackluster gave way to a 3rd place ranking in the C-USA standings but ultimately was good enough to garner an invitation to this year’s New Mexico Bowl. Surprisingly, the Thundering Herd closed out this year’s regular season with back to back losses, which makes their entrance into this Bowl game even more of a bombshell. Nevertheless, the sportsbook betting lines have taken this into account as they’re pegging Marshall as a decisive underdog against Colorado State. That, coupled with their recent run with bad luck, makes the Rams a superior betting option in this bowl game betting matchup.
While college football bettors will want to stay away from Marshall on the money line, taking the Thundering Herd on the spread isn’t a half bad option. Marshall is 8-4 against the spread on the season while their opponent is 4-8 ATS comparatively. The payout is unquestionably better than taking Colorado State straight up, and it’s a pretty safe bet too.
Colorado State Rams
Colorado State charges into this year’s New Mexico Bowl sporting a 7-5 record. The Rams finished the season ranking 2nd in the MW – Mountain division. However, unlike the Thundering Herd, Colorado State finished out this year’s season on a high note by defeating San Jose State 42-14 at home. Notwithstanding the fact that the win over San Jose State snapped a 3-game losing streak, the Rams feel pretty good about their matchups in this one.
The Rams come into this contest with the better offense, but they’ll have to overcome a defense that’s much better than theirs in Marshall. Colorado State is currently averaging 33.8 points and 501 yards offensively. And while that beats out the 26.3 points and 369.8 yards Marshall is putting up, the Thundering Herd’s defense is no walk in the park. At the present time, Marshall is giving up a slim 19.3 on defense as well as 333.7 yards. For comparison, the Rams are allotting 27.5 points and 425.8. All things considered, those defensive differences shouldn’t be enough to sway sportsbook betting players to back Marshall.
