Northern Illinois Huskies
The Huskies turned in an 8-5 record last season that included 6-2 record in Mid-American Conference play. That eye-raising conference record led to a disappointing 3rd place ranking in the West Division of the MAC. Naturally, Northern Illinois did not receive an invitation to the conference tournament. They did however, get an invite to the Quick Lane Bowl. There they would face Duke in a 14-36 losing effort. In fact, with that loss the Huskies closed out the season with consecutive setbacks. This wasn’t the finish head coach Rod Carey was hoping for. However, Carey will be returning this year marking his 6th season with the program.
Players to Watch: Marcus Childers (1,674 passing yards, 16 TD, 5 INT), Jordan Huff (740 rushing yards, 4 TD, 5.8 AVG), and Spencer Tears (528 receiving yards, 4 TD, 43 REC).
The Hawkeyes flew high last season and turned in an 8-5 winning record. Also, Iowa posted a meager 4-5 record in Big Ten play. Despite sitting on such a weak record, Iowa ended up ranking 3rd overall in the West Division of the Big Ten. While that was good enough to be considered top 3 in the division, it wasn’t good enough to crack the Big Ten tourney. Nevertheless, the Hawkeyes did get to attend the Pinstripe Bowl, where they beat out Boston College 27-20. Kirk Ferentz will return in 2018 to lead Iowa in his 20th season at the helm.
Players to Watch: Nathan Stanley (2,437 passing yards, 26 TD, 6 INT), James Butler (396 rushing yards, 1 TD, 4.4 AVG), and Nick Easley (530 receiving yards, 4 TD, 51 REC).
