College Football Betting Odds Dislike the Undefeated Team

As the college football betting community prepares to conclude another thrilling season of NCAA ball, sportsbook fans are preparing to find the perfect bowl game to wager on. Of the countless bowl games that are available, the ones that tend to draw the most attention are the New Year’s Six bowls. Obviously the playoff games tend to be a little more competitive than the other contests, but that doesn’t mean that betting fans can’t take advantage of every lucrative opportunity the New Year’s six offers. One contest that should draw a considerable amount of action is the 2017 Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic between the Western Michigan Broncos and the Wisconsin Badgers.
The Cotton Bowl Classic is one of the more outstanding traditions in American college football that has been held annually since January 1st, 1937. Sportsbook fans will remember that since 1996 the Cotton Bowl has traditionally pit a runner-up from the Big 12 Conference against a team from the SEC. This year the Cotton Bowl is breaking from that tradition by pairing the champion of the Mid-American Conference, Western Michigan, against a team that was chosen as an at-large out of the Big Ten Conference, Wisconsin. The Badgers will be coming into this contest with a 10-3 record while Western Michigan has enjoyed an unblemished season and will be coming into the Cotton Bowl at 13-0. With that in mind, let’s see what the NCAA betting lines have to say about the Broncos’ chances of remaining undefeated.
NCAAF Odds – Cotton Bowl – Monday, January 2nd
Western Michigan Broncos +8½ (-120) 53 (-110) +255
Well, it seems like the college football betting odds are predicting that the Badgers’ win streak will come to an abrupt end come January. This matchup will mark the 5th meeting between these schools. So far Wisconsin leads the all-time series 3-1 and the odds are certain that they will extend that lead to 4-1. August 31st, 2000 was the most recent time these two had met, when the Badgers triumphed over the Broncos with a score of 19-7. Interestingly enough, this contest will be each school’s first appearance at a Cotton Bowl.
With their 29-23 win over Ohio in the MAC Championship, Western Michigan became the 2nd team to enter the bowl season undefeated (the Crimson Tide is also undefeated). Behind senior quarterback Zach Terrell’s impressive efforts, the Broncos have 11 of their 12 regular season games by two touchdowns or more, which includes shutouts to both Akron and Buffalo. This season Terrell has thrown for 3,376 yards, 32 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, and a70.8 completion percentage. Additionally, Terrell was awarded the Campbell Trophy – commonly referred the ‘Academic Heisman’.
Michigan’s high-powered offense should provide an excellent matchup against Wisconsin’s 7th ranked total defense. However, the Badgers’ defense fell apart in the second half of the Big Ten Championship against Penn State and college football betting fans can expect the Broncos to be looking to exploit Wisconsin’s defense in a similar fashion. In the end, the odds sportsbooks put together for this contest may leave some fans scratching their heads.
