Armed Forces Bowl | Houston vs. Army – Saturday, December 22nd
When: 3:30 pm ET
Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium, Fort Worth, Texas
Stream: Watch ESPN
College Football Betting Odds:
The Houston Cougars delivered an 8-4 performance this season to tie for 1st in the American Athletic West Division. Unfortunately they ended up tying with the Memphis Tigers, who defeated Houston 52-31. Subsequently the Cougars did not receive an invitation to the conference championship game, where they would have faced No. 8 UCF. Nevertheless Houston lost the matchup against Memphis and are now scrambling to avoid finishing the season on a loss. Fortunately the Armed Forces Bowl provides them the perfect opportunity to do so. However, the college football betting odds aren’t exactly siding with Houston here. But what do the numbers have to say about this contest? Well there’s a bit of give and take on both sides. The Cougs come in averaging 46.4 points per game, much higher than the 29.7 that Army is putting up. However, the Black Knights certainly sport the better defense as they give up 18.0 to the whopping 34.4 that Houston gives up.
Players to Watch: D’Eriq King (2,982 passing yards, 36 TD, 6 INT), Patrick Carr (816 rushing yards, 5 TD, 5.7 AVG), and Marquez Stevenson (947 receiving yards, 9 TD, 67 REC).
Army Black Knights
The Black Knights finished the regular season with an eye-raising 10-2 record. Out of all the independent programs in the nation, only Notre Dame had a better record this season. At the end of the day, that’s not a bad team to be usurped by. Entering this weekend’s matchup riding an 8-game winning streak, Army is confident that they can get the job done this upcoming Saturday. They may not have the better offense but their defense should pose plenty of problems for Houston. And since we’re in December, it’s better to have the superior defense than the better offense.
Players to Watch: Kelvin Hopkins Jr. (956 passing yards, 6 TD, 3 INT), Darnell Woolfolk (885 rushing yards, 14 TD, 4.2 AVG), and Jordan Asberry (197 receiving yards, 3 TD, 9 REC).
