Wildcats Huge Sportsbook Favorites over Mississippi

Those who frequently place basketball bets probably heard the news regarding North Carolina and their head coach Roy Williams’ 800th career win. Michael Jordan, a UNC alumni, gifted Williams with custom signed sneakers – something we all wish we could receive – to commemorate the lifetime achievement. Unfortunately, that hallmark wasn’t enough to get the Tar Heels within the Top-5 AP ranking. Nevertheless, sportsbook fans will still be able to watch a Top-5 team compete for glory on Tuesday night.
This Tuesday night, No. 5 Kentucky will make the short trip to the Magnolia State to face off against the unranked Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Wildcats are coming into this contest with a 15-2 record that includes a 5-0 record in SEC play. On the other hand, Mississippi, despite being unranked, has still turned in a pretty good season. Currently, the Bulldogs are sitting on a 12-4 record that includes a 3-1 record in SEC play. Still, regardless of the Bulldogs’ winning record, the Wildcats are likely to come into this contest as the heavy sportsbook favorite.
BETTING NCAA BASKETBALL ODDS – REGULAR SEASON – Tuesday, January 17th
Kentucky Wildcats -13½ (-115) 159 (-110) -1300
Just as anticipated, the bookies think your basketball bets should go towards Kentucky. The Wildcats have become synonymous with success ever since John Calipari joined the program back in 2009. That season, Calipari led the Wildcats to an Elite Eight finish and just two years later Kentucky would go on to become national champions. Last year Calipari was only able to lead his team to a Sweet Sixteen appearance, but this year the Wildcats have some of the best odds of going all the way.
The Bulldogs may be one of the hottest teams in the SEC and are currently on a 3-game win streak. However, that slight momentum is still not enough to convince online sportsbooks that they have a chance against No. 5 Kentucky. Additionally, the Bulldogs have won 6 out of their last 7 games and a large part of that success can be attributed to Quinndary Weatherspoon, Mississippi State’s leading scorer. Coming into this contest, Weatherspoon is averaging 17.9 points per game and 2.1 assists per contest. As a whole, the Bulldogs average 74.4 points per contest on a 45.4 shooting percentage. Defensively the Bulldogs allow 66.8 points per game and their opponents make 42.4% of their shots. Aric Holman is Mississippi State’s 2nd leading scorer who is currently averaging 10.4 points per game and 6.8 rebounds.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, their opponent’s statistics look slightly better. Heading into this matchup, the Wildcats are scoring 93.6 points on a 49.5 shooting percentage. Defensively The Wildcats allow 71.7 points and their opponents are draining 40.7% of their shots. One of the many reasons that Kentucky is deserving of your basketball bets is Malik Monk, the Wildcats leading scorer who is currently averaging 21.8 points and 2.3 rebounds. The Wildcats second leading scorer is De’Aaron Fox who is netting 16.5 points per game and 6.4 assists.
