Florida State might be one of the most well-known schools in the nation, but the Seminoles have struggled to qualify to the Big Dance with consistency. In fact, out of these two programs, it was the Eagles who were making consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles came into this contest with a 25-8 record as well as the No. 3 seed in the March Madness betting tourney. Florida Gulf Coast had a slightly better record (26-7) but the NCAA committee still felt that the Eagles only deserved the No. 14 seed, and Thursday’s results prove that they knew what they were doing.
The Seminoles were lead to a victory by Dwayne Bacon who was able to score 25 points in 34 minutes of playing time. Second in points for the Seminoles was Jonathan Isaac who put 17 on the board for Florida State. Two more players scored double-digit points for Florida State. Xavier Rathan-Mayes put 10 on the board for the program and Terance Mann was able to score 11.
Florida Gulf Coast had a surprising performance from Brandon Goodwin who ended up netting the team 28 points on the night. The Eagles second-leading point scorer Thursday night was Zach Johnson who connected with the net for 17 points. Florida Gulf Coast was unable to produce another double-digit scorer.

Even though they weren’t able to overcome their Florida brethren, the Eagles can still boast that they were able to qualify for the tournament two years in a row. Overall, the Eagles turned in a 26-8 record that includes a 12-2 record in the A-Sun conference. That conference record was enough to land the Eagles a 1st place finish in the conference.
