Online Horse Betting Recap of 2017 Breeders’ Cup

The 2017 Breeders’ Cup has come and past giving horse betting fans one epic conclusion to the last major racing event of the year. We saw a lot of head turning action at this year’s event and a recap is certainly in order. Arrogate, who many racebook players were hailing a the absolute favorite ahead of this year’s Breeders’ Cup, ended up coming short in his final race, giving us a wire-to-wire finish that was exactly what the event called for.

In the end, it was Gun Runner who left Arrogate behind to eat his dust in the final race of the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Technically speaking, both Gun Runner and Arrogate entered Saturday night’s event as co-favorites, both facing 2-1 odds to win the event. Nevertheless, most online betting polls showed that fans were favoring Arrogate, given his recent run with success. Ultimately however, it was the Steve Asmussen trained Gun Runner who leaped out to a half-length lead at the ¼ mile, and would go on to hold the lead to lay hold to its first win in three attempts over the defending Breeders’ Cup Classic champion.

Arrogate, who holds and takes into retirement the title of the sports’ cash king, managed to finish in a dead-heat for fifth place alongside Gunnevera. Furthermore, West Coast, who was a facing a 4-1 favoritism in the final odds, delivered a strong effort on the final stretch to earn a third place finish. From the start, the race quickly turned into a two-horse competition between Gun Runner and Collected – who was facing 6-1 odds. Gun Runner’s winning push began at 2 ¼ lengths.

Undoubtedly, for Arrogate, and throw in trainer Bob Baffert in there as well, the day was yet another disheartening showing at Del Mar, considering that they’re coming off a year in which they won the race. Jockey Mike Smith was quick to find an excuse for the poor showing considering his comments during the post-race coverage, stating that track surface may have played a significant hand in determining the race’s results.

Gun Runner, steered by Florent Geroux, was able to cover 1 ¼ miles in 2:01:29 and paid $6.80, $4.40, and $3.20.

The setback ended Baffert’s impressive streak at the Classic, since he’s won the last three years consecutively. Baffert finished 2-3 in the race, with Collected finishing second and West Coast coming in at third.
