History of Malibu Stakes

The race was inaugurated in 1952 as the Malibu Sequel Stakes. It was changed to Malibu Stakes in 1958 and is run that way ever since. The race has attracted some of the best horses in the United States and is the first leg of the racetrack’s Strub Series. The event was held twice a year (January and December) in 1955, 1960, 1966 and 1984. It was staged in two divisions in 1972, 1975, 1981 and 1984. The race was not held in 1959, 1964, 1967 and 1970. Twirling Candy holds the fastest time for the race at one minute and 19.70 seconds while jockey Bill Shoemaker had the most wins with eight. Last year, Flightline won the race and his jockey Flavian Prat broke the three-race streak by jockey Mike E. Smith.

Betting on Horseracing at the Malibu Stakes 12/26/2022

Nine horses will take part in the seven-furlong (1.408-kilometer) race. The absolute favorite in this race is Taiba, which is the only winner of a Grade 1 race in the field, taking home the Santa Anita Derby and the Pennsylvania Derby. The Bob Baffert-trained horse placed third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic behind Flightline and Olympiad. He will occupy the No6 post and will have a 6-5 odds in the race. Taiba will face tough competition with Messier and Forbidden Kingdom. Messier, who is also trained by Bob Baffert, has placed either first or second in his first six starts while Forbidden Kingdom won thrice and placed either second or third three times. Other horses set to start in the event are Apprehend, Nakatomi, Hoist the Gold, Perfect Flight, Strava and Straight No Chaser.

Entries for the 2022 Malibu Stakes

  1. Forbidden Kingdom 9-2
  2. Messier 8-1
  3. Apprehend 15-1
  4. Nakatomi 5-1
  5. Hoist the Gold 8-1
  6. Taiba 6-5*
  7. Perfect Flight 15-1
  8. Strava 10-1
  9. Straight No Chaser 12-1

Taiba is expected to dominate the fast-paced race but he will have challenges along the way in Forbidden Kingdom, Messier, Nakatomi and Hoist the Gold. The Breeders’ Cup Classic third placer might bring his best effort in the race to end the year with a bang. The three-year-old horse has the capability to sprint his way to the top so there is no problem for him to win the seven-furlong spectacle, experts in horseracing betting picks say.
