Jockey in Some Hot Online Horse Betting Water
Posted by: Anthony Yaylor
Some interesting news has made its way across the online horse betting horizon. Tom O’Brien, who managed to make a splash in the first Grade 1 race of the 2019 sportsbook season, has landed himself in some hot water. Notwithstanding Elixir Du Nutz landing the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown, O’Brien has recently found out that he is in fact banned. The reason being that the jockey failed to weigh in after finishing 3rd overall in a handicapped hurdle down at Shaw’s Cross. Even though O’Brien will claim innocent negligence, he is still facing a 7 day ban. So what impact this did have in the world of online horse betting? Let’s take a look at O’Brien’s Racebook impact.
O’Brien’s Racebook Impact
While O’Brien might not have thought much about his mishap, mobile betting sites certainly felt differently. Ultimately his mistake meant that each way backers of Shaw’s Cross, who just happened to back to start joint favorite at 9-4 despite opening at 11-4 on course, would not receive their payouts. It’s one thing to influence the result of a race but affecting the pockets of punters is an entirely different affair. This also resulted in Cougar Kid, who was facing 8-1 odds, being promoted to third.
The whole debacle is somewhat surprising, given O’Brien’s extensive career as a jockey. Having had his first stint in the profession in the 2004-05 season, there’s really no excuse for such an elementary error. Naturally, a monsoon of punters took to social media to air their frustration with such an inexcusable, yet basic error.
This mistake will result in O’Brien, a regular jockey for premier trainer Colin Tizzard, being suspended from the 29th of January until the 4th of February. Online horse betting players will naturally recognize this as an important week seeing as how it includes the Contenders Day at Sandown Park on the 2nd of February. This is certainly something to keep in mind when making predictions off of O’Brien’s racebook impact.
Other Jockey News
While O’Brien’s mistake was extremely impactful, there have been other jockey related news that are worth going over. Richard Johnson, the reigning jockey champion and undeniable leader of the 2019 title race, was made to give up his rides on Tuesday at Newcastle. We saw him get dismount early in the race and then get trampled by other runners at Fontwell Park on Monday.
Despite the fact that original reports claimed he would be fit to ride, it’s looking like he will be out of action until Thursday.
Dave Roberts, Johnson’s agent, had this to say to reporters, “Richard is very sore. He’s taking today and Wednesday off and will be back on Thursday.”
Recently we witnessed Johnson get kicked off at Fontwell from Umndeni, the 1-2 odds on favorite. This was due to receiving an accidental bump from a rival right as the field took off. This sparked one of the more interesting but unexpected result. At the end of the day we saw My Destiny win by a nose, despite the fact that she was facing 66-1 odds.
