In 1935, the event was open to all horses three years and older. Three years later, however, the Santa Margarita Stakes Race was restricted to fillies and mares. It initially ran at seven furlongs (0.875 mile or 1.408 km). Then, it was reduced to six (0.75 mile or 1.207 km) in 1937. The organizers extended the distance in 1938 and made it 8.5 furlongs (1 1/16 miles or 1.709 km). Due to World War II, the organizers halted the race. Then, it resumed in 1945. In 1949, the officials again revised the race distance. They upgraded it to nine furlongs (1 1/8 miles or 1.810 km). The event returned to an 8.5-furlong race in 1953. Then in 1955, it was reverted back to nine furlongs where it stands now.
In 2019, it was downgraded to Grade II several years after it was known as a Grade I race. Our Betters, Curious Clover, Tizna, Bayakoa, and Paseana made history in Santa Margarita as they were the only two-time winners of the event. Paradise Woods emerged victorious in the 2019 edition of the race, beating La Force and Exuberance with a clocking of one minute 51.95 seconds. The race was not held in 2020 due to the emergence of the coronavirus disease in the US.

Lining up are six horses as “probable” entries in the Grade II event. Some of them have appeared in prestigious races in the past. Harvest Moon topped the Zenyatta and Torrey Pines Stakes Races last year while finishing fourth in the Beholder Mile and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Battle-tested, Warren’s Showtime is a consistent third and fourth placer in previous stakes races.
Crystal Ball had a notable race in the Coaching Club American Oaks where she finished second behind Paris Lights while Bob Baffert-trained As Time Goes By placed second in the Beholder Mile Stakes behind Preakness Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver. In three races, Pharoah’s Heart has an eventful career as she has two second-place finishes and came in first in her maiden race. This Tea, on the other hand, may have not won a race in her six previous starts but she could pull off a surprise as she is familiar with the race track for the horse has raced four times, including three straight since January.
2021 Santa Margarita Stakes Race Pick
As Time Goes By is favored by horseracing bookmakers to win the Grade II race due to her vast experience in prestigious races and consistency in placing in the top four of every event she is in. She looks forward to the challenges coming from Pharoah’s Heart, Harvest Moon, and Warren’s Showtime in the middle of the race.
