2021 Louisiana Derby Race – Big-time horse racing action takes center stage with the USD1-million Louisiana Derby. The 1 3/16-mile (1.911-kilometer) race will flag off on Saturday, March 20, at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. The event is one of the preparatory races for the Triple Crown’s first jewel, the Kentucky Derby. This year’s edition has generated the interest of 10 horses that seek prestige and glory by winning the Grade II stakes race.

The Race
Originally known as the Crescent City Derby, the race began in 1894 and was later renamed in honor of the race track’s home state, Louisiana. Some horses that won the race have emerged victorious in the Triple Crown races. Two of them, Black Gold (1924) and Grindstone (1996) captured the Kentucky Derby while 1988 winner Risen Star became a “Dual Classic Winner” by winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. The race was first held at one mile in 1894 as the Crescent City Race Course that lasted until 1908. It was also held at Jefferson Park from 1920 to 1931. The race was canceled in 2006 due to Hurricane Katrina as the weather disturbance partially destroyed the track.
Betting on the Horseracing Race
Ten horses are lined up as probable starters in the USD1-million, Grade II stakes race. Leading the field is this year’s Risen Star winner Mandaloun, who seeks to secure another victory to gain additional points for inclusion in the Louisiana Derby. He will be joined by Risen Star runners-up Proxy and Midnight Bourbon who are both capable of winning the race as well. Also set to provide some excitement in the derby is Hot Rod Charlie, who placed second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
El Camino Real Derby winner Rombauer is also listed as a probable winner in this event and like the four initially mentioned, has the tools to dominate the race and notch another victory even for his young career.
