2021 Joe Hernandez Stakes Race: Favorites, Longshots and Predictions

2021 Joe Hernandez Stakes Race – Top-class horseracing action kicks off this New Year with the 14th running of the Joe Hernandez Stakes. Eleven horses are lined up in the Grade II race that was named after famous Santa Anita Park race caller Joe Hernandez. The USD200,000 event will be the seventh race of the January 1 calendar at the Santa Anita Park. The 6 1/2-furlong (1.307-kilometer) race for four-year-old horses and up will flag off at around 6:30 PM ET and will be streamed live via the Santa Anita Park website.

Texas Wedge is back to defend the title but he will face a tough challenge from P R Radio Star, Hembree, Chaos Theory, and True Valour. Betting on horseracing will be challenging this New Year’s Day as the defending champion is slightly favored in this race but several horses are also capable of pulling off a surprise win in this sprint race.

The Race

The event was named in honor of Joe Hernandez, the race caller from the track opened on Christmas Day 1934 until he fainted at the microphone in January 1972. The first race was held in 2008. It was predominantly raced on the downhill turf course over 6 1/2 furlongs. In 2010, the race was moved to the synthetic all-weather track due to weather. In 2019, the event was upgraded to Grade III and was raised to Grade II a year later. Last year, the event had a distance of 5 1/2 furlongs (1.106-kilometers) on turf, using the backstretch start. Desert Code first won the race in 2008 while Texas Wedge emerged as last year’s winner.

Betting on Horseracing at the 2021 Joe Hernandez Stakes Race

Eleven horses are entered in the horseracing event. Most bettors are placing their bets on Texas Wedge, a six-year-old gelding who took home the 2020 edition of the race. However, Texas Wedge has not performed well in the past races. This includes the event that he placed 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. In his last race, he finished second behind Chaos Theory in a five-furlong allowance race. Other entries include P R Radio Star, Encoder, Hembree, True Valour, Blitzkrieg, Wildman Jack, Chaos Theory, Oiseau de Guerre, Mesut, and Ohio. Another entry to look out for is Chaos Theory, which has played well in short-distance races. He has won five races under six furlongs. Hembree is another bet to look out for in this race even though he has won in longer-distance races. Before placing first in November, he finished third in three consecutive races.

2021 Joe Hernandez Stakes Race Pick

Texas Wedge is favored to go back-to-back in the Joe Hernandez Stakes Race, according to sports betting odds. It is high time for the six-year-old to win another race after a string of bad luck in previous starts. Hembree and Chaos Theory are alternative picks in the race after their good finishes in their past events. However, racing aficionados must also get ready for other entries who are capable of pulling off surprise victories at the finish line.
