The Race

The name of the race comes from former Monmouth Park Racetrack president Amory L. Haskell. It was first staged in 1968 as the Monmouth Invitational Handicap at a distance of 1 1/8 miles. Balustrade was the first winner of the race. In 1996, Buick began a three-year sponsorship deal with the race organizers. It was renamed as Buick Haskell Invitational Handicap. In 1999, it went back to Haskell Invitational Handicap. Seven years later, it was amended again and became the Haskell Invitational Stakes. Some of the notable horses who won the race were Authentic, Maximum Security, American Pharoah, Rachel Alexandra, War Emblem, and Point Given.

Betting on Horseracing at 2021 Haskell Stakes

Eight horses will compete in the Haskell Stakes Race. It could have been nine but Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer dropped out. With this development, the race has primarily become a three-way fight between Hot Rod Charlie, Midnight Bourbon, and Mandaloun. Hot Rod Charlie has become a consistent performer at stakes races as he placed in the top three of the last five races he is in. He placed second at Belmont, third in Kentucky, and first at the Louisiana Derby. On the other hand, Midnight Bourbon has bounced back from a disappointing sixth-place finish at the Kentucky Derby by placing second behind Rombauer at the Preakness Stakes.

Before the Kentucky Derby debacle, Midnight Bourbon had some good finishes at the Louisiana Derby (second), Risen Star (second), Lecomte (first), Champagne (third), and Iroquois (second). Mandaloun is another entry to watch out for, with the Pegasus Stakes winner having the capability of pulling off wins and top-three finishes consistently. A dark horse in this race is Weyburn, who came in second to Mandaloun at the Pegasus. The colt is having a great 2021 as he finished within the top four in his three starts this year. Pickin’ Time is an eight-race veteran that can pull off surprises in the race. Basso, Antigravity, and Following Sea complete the list of entries in the Haskell Stakes and could give the favorites a headache during the race.

2021 Haskell Stakes Race Pick

Since one of the highly-favored horses (Rombauer) pulled out of the race in favor of another stakes race, all eyes will now be on the battle between Hot Rod Charlie, Midnight Bourbon and Mandaloun. When it comes to betting on horseracing, they can be dependable out of the gates and to the finish line. But at the end of the day, Hot Rod Charlie’s consistent performances might give him the edge over Midnight Bourbon and Mandaloun and take home the Haskell Stakes by two or three lengths.
