The Race
Its first run in 1960 was at a distance of 1 1/4 miles (2.012 kilometers). Before its name today, the race was originally named Arcadia Handicap. Forty-one years later, the event was renamed Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap. In 2010, organizers changed the event from a handicap to a stakes race on an allowance weight base. In 1987, the distance of the race was changed from 1 1/4 miles to one mile and the race was upgraded to Grade 1 in 2005.
The first winner of the 2021 Frank E. Kilroe race was American Comet. Some of the prominent winners of the horseracing spectacle are Mr. Consistency (1964), Rivet (1969), Daryl’s Joy (1971), back-to-back winner Ga Hai (1975-76), Caucasus (1977), Exceller (1978), Flourescent Light (1979), Perrault (1982), Strawberry Road (1986), Prized (1990), Kip Deville (2007), Gio Ponti (2009), first female winner Proviso (2010) and Bai a Bali (2017).
