The Withers, named after top owner/breeder David Durham Withers, held its inaugural run in 1874 at the Jerome Park Racetrack. Sixteen years later, it was hosted by Morris Park Racecourse and it was in the track until 1904. The race was also held at the Jamaica Race Course and Belmont Park before the Aqueduct Racetrack took the hosting cudgels. It is Derby’s fourth official stop in New York after the Champagne Stakes in October, Remsen Stakes in December and Jerome Stakes on January 1.
Betting on Horse Racing at the 2020 Withers Stakes Race
Remsen Stakes winner Shotski is the top favorite when he enters the gate at the Aqueduct Racetrack, according to throughbred horse race betting sites. The son of Blame won by a half-length in the Grade 2 race. It was a great improvement from fourth place five weeks earlier in Churchill Downs. The Jeremiah O’Dwyer-trained colt hopes to continue his streak to gain valuable points for the Kentucky Derby.
However, Shotski needs to fend off Portos, who won a maiden special weight race at the Aqueduct on December 31. The colt out of Tapit and Fierce Boots is trained by Todd Pletcher and hopes to continue his winning streak by taking home the Withers Stakes.
Another contender in the race that could give Shotski a run for the money is Prince of Pharoahs. The son of American Pharoah won by five lengths in his second start in October in Belmont Park. Two months later, Linda Rice-trained colt raced again and earned three Derby points following a dead-heat finish for second in the Jerome Stakes.
Vanzzy and Monday Morning Qb may also give early threats in the race with their reputation as fast starters.
2020 Withers Stakes Race Betting Favorites – Odds
Shotski will emerge victorious in the eight-horse field to earn the 2020 Withers Stakes title and precious Kentucky Derby points. Prince of Pharoahs and Portos are capable of producing surprises in the race but Shotski will pounce and reign supreme in the event.
