Known as America’s premier and most lucrative race for three-year-old fillies, the annual Kentucky Oaks has been one of the attractions during the Kentucky Derby week. The event was first held on May 19, 1875, by Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. Since then, the Oaks is one of the oldest continuously contested sporting events in US history aside from the Kentucky Derby. Patterned after the British Epsom Oaks, the Oaks is also one of the most popular horse races in the American horseracing society due to its high turnout in terms of live attendance. However, this year’s race will be held without spectators to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Among the notable winners of the race are Rachel Alexandra, who set the largest winning margin of 20 1/4 lengths when she won the race in 2009, and 2003 winner and speed record holder Bird Town. Last year, Serengeti Express won the Kentucky Oaks by besting Liora and Lady Apple.
