2020 Jeff Ruby Steaks Race
When: Saturday, March 14, 1:00 PM ET
Where: 7500 Turfway Road, Florence, Kentucky
The race initially kicked off on April 1, 1972, under the name Spiral Stakes. In 1982, whiskey maker Jim Beam acquired the rights to sponsor the race and was renamed as Jim beam Spiral Stakes. Twenty years later, Lane’s End Farm bought the sponsorship rights from Jim Beam and took over from 2002 to 2013. Horseshoe Casino became the race’s sponsor in 2013 and lasted until 2018 when Jeff Ruby Culinary Entertainment, owner of Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouses took over as the main sponsor for the event. The word Steaks is a homophone of the word Stakes and it is used for commercial reasons.
Notable winners of the stakes race include 2011 Kentucky Derby and 2013 Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom, 1993 Preakness Stakes top finisher Prairie Bayou, 1992 Kentucky Derby topnotcher Lil E. Tee, 1991 Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Hansel and 1990 Preakness champion Summer Squall. Last year, Somelikeithotbrown won the event, beating Dynamic Racer by 3 1/4 lengths. Moonster and Five General came in third and fourth, respectively.
Betting on Horse Racing at the 2020 Jeff Ruby Steaks
The 49th running of the Jeff Ruby Steaks Race will feature three-year-old horses seeking entries for the Kentucky Derby. The synthetic main track of Turfway will be the battleground for thoroughbred entries that seek recognition and a crack at the first jewel of the US Triple Crown. As of press time, three horses are listed as possible entries for the race.
These include Invader, who emerged victorious in the 2020 John Battaglia Memorial, and Halo Again, who won his first two starts before finishing eighth in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes. Something Natural, on the other hand, hopes to improve his second-place finish in his previous outing on January 26. Halo Again raced in a 1 1/8 mile race and bested Malibu Mambo and Muskoka Gold in the Coronation Futurity Stakes in November last year.

2020 Jeff Ruby Steaks Race Pick
Invader has a big chance of winning the race based on his impressive showing in the John Battaglia Memorial. Horseracing bookies favor the three-year-old son of War Front and Say to win the race and the full 20 points that are at stake in the Jeff Ruby Steaks.
However, Invader will have his hands full as he faces Halo Again. This is due to his experience in a 1 1/8 mile race and Something Natural. If Invader wins, 20 Kentucky Derby points and the race’s top prize will go to him.
