Inaugurated in 1968, the Haskell Stakes has been a major race for three-year-old colts that offers important points for the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup. The event is named after former Monmouth Park president Amory Haskell. It was initially known as the Amory L. Haskell Handicap and it was a race for older horses. The event was made an invitation-only stakes race for three-year-olds since 1981.
Since its first running, 10 horses have gone on to win in the Eclipse Awards as best three-year-old colt or filly and these are Wajima, Holy Bull, Serena’s Song, Skip Away, Point Given, War Emblem, Big Brown, Lookin at Lucky, American Pharoah and Rachel Alexandra. Last year, Maximum Security topped the 2019 race. This year’s running will also put up a USD1-million bonus for any horse that sweeps the Haskell, Kentucky Derby and the Breeder’s Cup Classic. It is one of the two Grade 1 events prior to the September 5 Kentucky Derby.

Seven horses are entered in the pre-Kentucky Derby and pre-Breeders’ Cup Classic race. Among them, Belmont Stakes runnerup Dr Post and Santa Anita Derby second placer Authentic are favorites to win the race. The Todd Pletcher-trained Dr Post had emerged victorious in two of his first career runs before coming in second behind Tiz the Law in the Belmont Stakes. Meanwhile, Authentic seeks to become the ninth Bob Baffert-trained horse to win the Haskell and first since American Pharoah in 2015. Ny Traffic is another superb entry in the probables list as he previously finished bridesmaid in the 2020 Matt Winn Stakes. Other colts listed in the race are Ancient Warrior, Fame to Famous, Lebda and Jesus’ Team.

Off-track oddsmakers look to cash in on Dr Post due to his impressive showing in the Belmont Stakes. However, he will face tough competition in Baffert-handled Authentic. Other horses expected to give further excitement in the 53rd Haskell Stakes and shock the field is Ny Traffic. The four remaining entries can likewise pull off big surprises in this race, as they seek to gain valuable Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup points as well.
