The Race

The event was inaugurated in 1946 and was initially known as the Gulfstream Park Handicap. In 1973 and 1974, the race was held with a Grade II rating and the following year it was rated Grade I. The stakes race returned to Grade II status in 2003 and it is still raced under the same grade up to present. Most of the stagings of the event are run in March and for the first time in three years, the race is held in February. Horses age four and up are entered in this one-mile race and among the winners of the event include Honor Code, Palace Malice and Mucho Macho Man. Last year, Prince Lucky outclassed Tale of Silence and Guy Caballero to take home the title.

The one-mile event features veteran racehorses that took part in previous prestigious stakes races. This year’s edition has a balanced mix with two four-year-olds, two five-year-olds and two six-year-olds listed as probable entries. Veterans of the bunch are True Timber and Phat Man who are both six years old. These two boast a combined eight first-place finishes tucked under their belt. Then, there’s former Kentucky Derby finisher and Pegasus World Cup veteran Bodexpress. Similar to the four-year-old colt, Mr. Freeze and Diamond Oops also took part in January’s Pegasus World Cup and finished second and fourth, respectively in a 1 1/8-mile (1.810-kilometer), Grade 1 race.

Hog Creek Hustle, on the other hand, placed second in his only one-mile race at the Grade 3, Pat Day Mile Stakes. Among the six probable participants, True Timber has the best clocking of one minute and 33.97 seconds which he made in the 2019 Kelso Handicap last September. Mr. Freeze and Diamond Oops had the second- and third-best one-mile time with a 1:34.11 and 1:34.20 clips, respectively. Bodexpress, Phat Man and Hog Creek Hustle are no pushovers as they had clockings of 1:34.84, 1:35.09 and 1:35.21 in their one-mile races, respectively.

2020 Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes Race Pick

Thoroughbred racing bettors see True Timber as the top favorite based on the best clocking he submitted in a one-mile race. However, everything could depend on how the pace is like and how he is positioned on the gate. In this event, True Timber could get challenged with equally-talented racehorses. Phat Man and Bodexpress can pull off a victory in the one-mile race as well.
