2020 Belmont Stakes Race Favorites, Longshots and Predictions
2020 Belmont Stakes Race – The first jewel of this year’s the United States Triple Crown saga begins on Saturday, June 20, with the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes Race. Traditionally, this is the third race in the series with the Kentucky Derby kicking off the Triple Crown followed by the Preakness Stakes. But due to the coronavirus disease pandemic that has badly affected the US, Belmont will be the first leg of the Triple Crown, followed by the Kentucky Derby (rescheduled to September 5) and the Preakness Stakes (October 3).
The race will be shortened to 1 1/8 miles (1.810 kilometers) from 1 1/2 miles (2.414 kilometers) and spectators will not be permitted to witness it live at the Belmont Park. The USD1-million race will be aired live via NBC Sports between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM ET. As of press time, eight horses are listed as probable starters for the race and online Belmont Stakes bookies bet on Tiz the Law running away with the first race of the Triple Crown.

When: June 20, 2020, 3:00-6:00 PM ET
Where: Belmont Park, Elmont, New York
Nicknamed “The Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes has been the true test for Triple Crown-seeking horses. Only 13 of 36 horses that attempted to complete the feat were successful with the last being Justify in 2018. From 1926 until last year, the race is run at a distance of 1 1/2 miles. There were also previous instances that the horseracing spectacle was run at distances of 1 1/8 miles, 1 1/4 miles, 1 3/8 miles and 1 5/8 miles.
To add prestige to the race, the winning horse will be draped with a blanket of white carnations while the winning owner is awarded a silver trophy for his achievement. Notable winners include Justify (2018), American Pharoah (2015), Affirmed (1978), Seattle Slew (1977) and Secretariat (1973). Last year, Sir Winston defeated Tacitus and Joevia to win the 10-horse race with a clocking of 2:28.30.
Betting on Horse Racing at the 2020 Belmont Stakes
The 2020 edition of the Belmont Stakes will feature three-year-old horses that stood out in previous stakes races and derbies around the US. The dirt track at Belmont Park will be the site of world-class action as these thoroughbred horses seek prestige and recognition.
Eight horses are listed probable starters for the race with Tiz the Law leading the charge. The Barclay Tagg-trained horse has raced five times since August 2019 and has won four of them, including the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby. The colt ran in Belmont and won a one-mile race.
However, he will be challenged by Basin, who has ran the 1 1/8-mile race in his last two outings; Sole Volante, who topped four of his six starts; and Max Player, who emerged victorious in his last two races. Dr Post could also make a surprise in this race as he has finished first in his last two starts. Probable starters for this stakes race are Modernist, Farmington Road and Tap It to Win.

* – Top Pick/Favorite
Horseracing bookies favor Tiz the Law to win the race despite his so-so performance in the Florida Derby. However, the race is expected to be close as the event is shorter by 3/8 miles (603 meters) so expect challenges from other horses such as Dr Post, Max Player and Tap It to Win. The Belmont Stakes is expected to be anybody’s race so a big upset is inevitable.
