Eight horses will slug it out in the 1 1/16-mile turf race that kicks off the Kentucky Derby festivities. Of the eight, three have emerged as initial favorites and they are Smooth Like Strait, Field Pass, and Fancy Liquor. Considered as the morning-line favorite, Smooth Like Strait seeks to extend his first-place run to three races and five of seven overall. The three-year-old colt will get a supreme challenge in Field Pass, who aims to bounce back from a seventh-place finish in the Saratoga Derby.
The horse has emerged victorious in five of his 11 starts and in his last 1 1/16-mile race, he emerged victorious in the Transylvania Stakes, edging past Street Ready and Fancy Liquor. Another horse that can light up the field is five-race veteran Fancy Liquor. The Caesars Stakes winner has placed in the top three in his first five races and has placed second behind Field Pass in the Transylvania Stakes. Other horses entered in the field are Taishan, American Butterfly, Sugoi, Sunsation, and King Theo.

In a very balanced American Turf Stakes field, Smooth Like Strait, Field Pass, and Fancy Liquor stand out as the best bets. However, Smooth Like Strait should pull it off in this tough field based on his track record. According to off-track oddsmakers, Field Pass, Fancy Liquor, and even Taishan will make it tough for Smooth Like Strait in his quest to earn a victory.
