The 2018 Kentucky Derby is almost here. The fastest two minutes in sports is one of the most important, if not the most important, horse betting online event of the year. To help racebook punters make the best possible parlay and picks, we’ve assembled a betting guide for this year’s field. Let’s mulch over some important information for this weekend’s event before taking a look at some 2018 Kentucky Derby betting tips.

2018 Kentucky Derby – Friday through Sunday, May 4th – 6th

Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky

TV: NBC

Stream: NBC Extra

Track: 1 ¼ miles || Dirt

Just two days away from the annual Grade I stakes competition, anxiety is starting to brew around this year’s event. Being the biggest showcase of American horse racing, there are innumerable bets to be placed. Justify enters as this year’s racebook favorite, but there are certainly plenty of horse betting online sleeper picks. Let’s take a look at some of those picks.

2018 Kentucky Derby Betting Tips || Potential Picks

Justify

Being the son of Scat Daddy, bettors can undoubtedly be certain that Justify will get the distance. On top of that, Justify brings a grand, strong and effortless stride to the table. And if that weren’t enough, Justify seems to be improving with every event he competes in. So far, Justify is undefeated in his races. He’s also run triple digit Beyer velocity figures in each of his last few races. That certainly makes Justify seem like the rightful favorite this weekend. But don’t take it from me, even Bob Baffert has called Justify a ‘superior horse’. If Justify can get off to a great start in this weekend’s event, he should win decisively.

Mendelssohn

Another son of Scat Daddy, Mendelssohn came at a heavy price for his owners, Coolmore. In fact, Coolmore had to fork over $3 million just to have a crack at the Derby. No doubt they were relieved to see Mendelssohn’s 20-length win at Dubai. Granted, that track certainly favors speed and Mendelssohn will need more than that to win this weekend. Nevertheless, that was unequivocally the most impressive prep race leading to the fastest two minutes in sports. Unsurprisingly, most 2018 Kentucky Derby betting tips have Mendelssohn pegged as an excellent sleeper pick. The one thing Mendelssohn does have over Justify is his experience. Having won last year’s Breeders Cup, there’s no question Mendelssohn can compete on the highest stage in the sport.

Bolt d’Oro

The two year old champion, he is expected to deliver another beautiful run at 3 years of age. But will it be enough to knock out the high level of talent in this year’s field? Bolt d’Oro has a great training camp to back him up so there should be no question that he’ll hit the board. However, racebook punters looking to back the winner this time around should take their bets elsewhere.
