Rahm Leads Winners in WGC Match Play; Martin Takes Dominican PGA Lead

Top-ranked Jon Rahm leads the winners of the WGC Match Play Championship. Then, Ben Martin grabs a one-stroke lead at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic on Thursday. The sport is loaded with big events during the weekend and golf betting odds are expected to be packed with a ton of action waiting to happen.

Rahm Storms Past Young for 2nd WGC Match Play Group Stage Win

Rahm, the reigning US Open champion, bucked a slow start to beat Cameron Young to remain unbeaten in his group. The Spaniard fought back from two down after five holes to gain his second straight win entering Friday’s final group stage matches at the Austin Country Club in Texas. Rahm can advance in the next round if he beats Patrick Reed.

Meanwhile, the three golfers who have a chance to supplant Rahm as world number one achieved mixed results. World number two Collin Morikawa is currently sharing the group two lead with a win and a draw. Morikawa settled for a draw with Sergio Garcia despite leading the Spaniard 3-up with five holes left to play. Third-ranked Viktor Hovland, meanwhile, leads the third group with a 2-0 win-loss mark after defeating Cameron Tringale, 2-and-1. Fifth seed Scottie Scheffler was in a four-way tie in Group 5 after losing 2-and-1 to Tommy Fleetwood. Seamus Power is also unbeaten in two games as he eliminated fourth seed Patrick Cantlay 5-and-4.

Billy Horschel, the defending champion, outclassed Tom Hoge 3-and-2 to seize the Group 12 lead on 2-0 win-loss. Tyrrell Hatton edged Kim Si-woo 1-up to seize the lead in Group 13 with a 2-0 mark. US ninth seed Bryson DeChambeau exits the tournament as Lee Westwood eliminates him 1-up.

Corey Conners and Alex Noren are 2-0 on Group 10 while Brooks Koepka is 2-0 on Group 16. Kevin Kisner is leading Group 6 with a 2-0 mark. Group 7, meanwhile, will pit Xander Schauffele and Lucas Herbert for the group stage crown as they are both 2-0. Dustin Johnson is at the top of Group 8 with a 2-0 mark.

The 64-player field based upon world rankings was divided into 16 groups of four for round-robin matches. Group winners will play weekend knockout rounds.

Martin Leads Dominican PGA with McDowell in Striking Distance

Ben Martin grabbed a one-stroke lead at the start of the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic. Martin, who is ranked 565th in the world, fired a 6-under-par 66 to edge Adam Schenk at the top of the leaderboard after 18 holes on Thursday.

While some of the best golfers around the world are in Texas for the WGC Match Play Championship, Martin and the rest of the competitors are taking part in the four-round event. Northern Ireland’s Greame McDowell are in joint third with 68 alongside Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Americans Vaughn Taylor and Hayden Buckley.

Martin’s round started bad with a bogey but he strung up seven birdies in the next 17 holes to take the lead.

Taylor, meanwhile, birdied three of the first five holes and the 18th to join the third-place group with Buckley, who birdied three of his last four holes. McDowell had a bogey-free round as he birdied the third, fourth, 12th, and 16th holes. Kiradech, on the other hand, eagled the par-5 seventh and shared second before a bogey at the par-3 17th.

The next three rounds will be exciting and a must-see. The question right now is whether Martin can lead the next 54 holes and win the title or the rest of the competitors will upstage the leader and take home the coveted prize.
