Online Golf Betting Prepares for Next Championship Round

Posted by: Charlie Smith

Online golf betting fans can rejoice as the WGC-HSBC Championships kicks off this Friday. The WGC-HSBC Championships were inaugurated in 2005 and since 2009 have represented one of the biggest events in World Golf Championship betting. It is the 4th tournament on the WGC calendar year and its field is usually compromised of some of the best players in the world. This year we’ve seeing the likes of Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama and even Phil Mickelson join the ranks of the competitors. However, not all those recognizable names have survived to the 2nd round – which will be held this Friday. Let’s take a look at what online sportsbooks have to say about the remaining field ahead of the day’s action.

Dustin Johnson -½ (-138)      –           -170

Justin Rose     +½ (+118)       –           +150

That’s quite a list of names to get through and obviously some matchups will have more importance than others. The first thing of note is the fact that Hideki Matsuyama, last year’s winner and the defending champion, has already been eliminated from title contention. This is a surprise for some players who bet on golf online, considering that the defending champ usually draws a considerable amount of attention. Especially when considering that Matsuyama was coming off a win at the Bridgestone Invitational and the online golf betting odds had him pegged as one of the frontrunners for this year’s WGC-HSBC Championships.

Granted, it’s not the biggest bombshell to see Matsuyama dismissed already. The opening field included 15 of the top 20 players. Heading into round 2, most sports bettors have begun to focus their attention on Dustin Johnson, who, combined with Matsuyama, has won the last 5 World Golf Championships. But now that Matsuyama has been eliminated, Johnson becomes the frontrunner to take it all the way. Johnson also made a big splash in round one when a last minute putter switch allowed him to finish the day with 63. After hitting four birdies in his final four holes, Johnson has a 3 point lead over Brooks Koepka, his nearest competitor.
