Early Masters Odds: Dustin Johnson Favored to Repeat
Posted by: Hilbert Mayer
With the 2021 edition of The Masters just two weeks away, big-time golf betting enthusiasts pick world number one and defending champion Dustin Johnson as the early favorite to win his second-consecutive title.
Johnson’s record-breaking victory in the 2020 Masters is still fresh from the minds of the golfing world, particularly to his rivals who attempted to outscore the 36-year-old South Carolina native. They witnessed how Dustin Johnson led from start to finish and brought home his first Masters title and second Major championship of his career. His consistency and precision are the best in the sport today and that is why oddsmakers always place him as the top favorite in every golf tournament he is in.
The Masters Tournament is back to its original playdate – every second week of April – after it was adjusted to November due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, 96 golfers had earned an invite to play in the major although this may be subject to change depending on the current health situation in the US and around the world. There will be a limited number of spectators allowed to watch the live, stroke-by-stroke action, and just like last year, the special par-three tournament will be canceled.
Last year, 92 of the best golfers around the world descended to the Augusta National Golf Club as they attempted to tame the fearsome layout of the world-class golf course. Johnson played consistently from day one and surged in the third and fourth rounds on his way to a five-shot victory over second placers Im Sung-jae and Cameron Smith.
This year’s field consists of the past winners of the Masters, including Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, and Danny Willett; US Open champs Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Gary Woodland; British Open winners Shane Lowry, Francesco Molinari and Henrik Stenson; PGA Championship titleholders Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Jimmy Walker, plus four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy. Smith, Jon Rahm, and Im will still be in the mix and will attempt to beat Johnson once again.
Johnson Remains Favorite with DeChambeau Close Behind
The best bookmaker sees Dustin Johnson as the top favorite at +800. However, he is closely followed by DeChambeau whose odds of winning the event is pegged at +900. Thomas, Koepka and Spieth are also favored to win the symbolic ‘’green jacket’’ with +1100, +1200 and +1200 odds, respectively. Rahm and McIlroy have +1400 odds to win while Morikawa and Westwood are +2000 each.
Johnson winning a back-to-back Masters crown is a possibility despite the improbable odds of a golfer repeating as the champion of this prestigious tournament. Only Tiger Woods has successfully defended the title over the past two decades and the unpredictability of the event is notorious wherein leads of six shots can be wiped out in just one round. Johnson has the opportunity to duplicate Woods’ feat and gain his second Masters’ title in a row but he must hurdle 95 other golfers to win another major and become a part of modern golf history.
